running out of fuel

Postby 4x4 tranny » Fri Jan 19, 2018 1:26 am

hi guys
had a quick hunt through here but cant find my problem, so here goes.
well after building camper went for drive gauge was on 1/4 full, but my luck ran out of fuel at a set of lights,
got a mate to get and bring some fuel, while waiting RACQ, road side assistance stop ask if I was a member na, told story he said ""well been sitting so long floats can jam"" , ok under stood.
end up getting it going bleed at injectors and went to garage.
well just been away and bugger me dead tank 1/4 full thinking should fill up and the bloody thing ran dry again. was lucky to get tow home check tank its 1/4 full. so gather pick up to high in tank.
took sensor out and tanks 1/4 full but pickups in fuel not much I must admit but is in fuel.
but still wont start.
ok any ideas?????
thanks in advance.

Petrol? Diesel? Model? Age?

Hole in dip tube, lift pump, and airleak at fuel filter spring to mind.

ok, thanks Jim,
Got tank out today but wont be able to check things till Monday.
Had quick look and sure enough there's at least 20 litres if not more still in tank, but will have to wait till after weekend to check further.
will keep you up to date.
did hear there maybe a restart program to reprime, anyone know this is the fact? like turning the key off an on 8 times?????

Turning the key 8 times is to program the remote central locking  N

Hey, had the same problem with my VJ 2004 , turns out the housing where ya fuel filter screws up to was porous and sucking air through the casting , apparently common problem ,i replaced the housing and has'nt missed a beat , but get an injector place to check it out for you they can hook it up to a pressure system and dunk it in a tank and watch for bubbles , Hows QLD :)

Have you checked the fuel pick up pipe in the tank for splits, holes ect. N

yes Ned
have had pickup float centre out of tank, checked pickup lines couldn't find any cracks splits etc,
Also check float, wiring etc.
am hoping to try and prime fuel directly from tank to container then next step is to remove filter and see if the pump will pull fuel through to there.
if no improvement as ""ford downunder"" says be replacing filter housing.
will be reporting.
oo ya does anyone know if there's a low fuel warning light on these vehicles ? I don't seem to be able to find one?

ok figure this one out...
primed fuel from tank to container direct , no problems good flow etc.
connected fuel lines to electric, pump turned key on an pump primed, no problems as all. cracked injectors and in two turns had fuel. done injectors up and it started,
have added no extra fuel to tank, and gauge still on 1/4 full, also did notice low fuel pump on dash on start up first time I've seen it.
so got me stuffed...lol
going for drive soon but its been idling for an hr now with out any fuel added before it stopped.
