Stuck on the road with a leaking radiator hose!

Postby Jaffasoft » Sat Jan 20, 2018 9:52 am

Stuck on the side of the road in NSW Australia near Evans Heads with three dogs in the campervan and running out of the water. The Van cut out as I was driving along moderately about 80kays I panicked and thought oh no something serious happened. I was able to find a place to coast to a stop lifted the bonnet and see little water coming out and sound s a bit steamy so I thought must forget put water in it though it was only a few days I checked it. I filled it with water and topped a bit of oil up through the oil was right.

Idioled it a little wee bit and the gage was down so I made off up the road. Then it cut out again... so I got under straight away and noticed it's a little spot where the radiator hose has worn on metal motor bits down low under the motor, the side of the motor actually. It's the longest rubber radiator hose.

I walked up the road a bit to investigate where I might be able to get it off the side of the road and away I could park up while and brainstorm how I'm going to find this in a strange area. I found a bit of a bush spot and went back and put nearly all the rest of my water supply, got 2lts left. And started and drove it while it was cool 500 mtrs and off into the bush.

Just posting because this could be the start of the ordeal any suggestions and or what I should do might be a help to guide me out of this? I'm thinking I will have to research what hose I need and see in the daylight tomorrow whether I can get it delivered to a post office (if I can find one somewhere don't even really know where I am). It's getting on dark now.

I've got enough food for a few days and dog food so should be right for a bit to survive :).

If you have any silicone sealant with you apply it to the hole on the hose, allow it to dry for a few hours and it should get you to the next town. N

Mmmm, sure I haven't got any  !?? Might have a $2 tube of superglue somewhere possibly. The hose has oil over it. I might be able to walk into town tomorrow but I don't think there's much in this little seaside town, a local mechanic might have some or know.... it'll be Sunday tomorrow so know the one about till Monday probably. I've got two rolls of common electrical tape.

Have you got any flour? make a thick paste and clean the area around leak as well as you can, cover in flour paste and leave to set then apply more paste and wrap in electrical tape?

I’d be looking for anything in town that would do as an internal tube for pipe to cut and put where split is and two jubilee clips(mechanic should have these)

Also run with rad cap off so you’re not putting pressure on the system

As above with the pressure cap.

Just drive it as gently as you can get away with. Air through the radiator will keep it cool, so fast road speed and low revs is the way.

Some good suggestions there... I've got a game plan on what to try in the daylight tomorrow now. Got no hacksaw, l'l be able to hack it off somehow, I've got a little set of quality German wire cutters for fencers. Will see if can find the components to be able to get a temp fix in the pipe first and then either with the cap off and drive it or order a new radiator pipe eBay and wait a few days. I'm out on a leisure cruise and got plenty of time! Have an electric ebike that supposed be able to do an 80kays range that's if pedal assist!

I’d try tapping it up first if it’s only rubbed a small hole clean oil off and tape it up and if you can do it on the van even better done this many times to a vehicle back to the workshop
