ASM clutch grabbing

Postby Transittoyhuler » Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:32 am

Hi all I’m new to this site & transits.
I would like someone with more experience to post their thoughts.
I know that this question has been asked before but my 2004 van with ASM works fine it’s just every now & then the clutch will grab I have removed the starter and found lots & lots of dust.
I have a theory that all that dust and the throw-out bearing being worn (I can hear it every now & then when it changes gear) and maybe the clutch is worn & the dual mass flywheel as well might be making the clutch grab point change.
Any thoughts ????

Well just going through all this my self, what sort of Ks has the vehicle done?
but by the sound of it and what I've been told what's wrong with mine its quite plane , its at its life end. and chancer are that the duel mas id pretty well had its life as well.
Could be corrected but judders on take off on steep climbs, but other wise you wouldn't know.

Is the dust 'metallic' grey powder ?
If so it's the dmf failing ...

If it's snatching taking up drive,or banging then stalling,it's likely free play in the dmf which confuses the system.
It can't judge the biting point correctly, the ones I've had doing this,I've converted to single mass...
Check / replace the spigot bearing too,if this goes, the drag on input shaft will also cause problems for the ASM.
Only problem being, you really need ids to do the 'clutch learns' after any work.

Cheers Frag that’s what I was thinking.
so it’s ok to change to a std flywheel ?
Yes It was gray metallic dust lots of it in the starter motor.
It sumetimes just grabs with a clunk & it has grabbed and stalled a few times.
Q . What is ids and how do I teach the clutch learns.
I work on motorbikes and I have experience with earthmoving & trucks
I have workshop with hoist.
I appreciate your help on this
Cheers Craig
