Software update

Postby Motorhometransit » Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:59 pm

Can you only get a software update / recalibration with Ford diagnostic (ids). My local garage tell me they can do the same thing with a sun obd reader but I'm not convinced?

it should be possible using a pass through device and software from Ford.

But to be honest for the sake of an hours labour, why not go to Ford?

Most recent decent aftermarket diagnostics are fairly good vs a few years back, a code reader is a code reader, nothing special until it comes to special programs but even there they are catching up fast, I've bought my fair share of these diagnostics and even basic hand held are as good as the more expensive pc based units......pc based units just look in front of the customer, there gain...totally useless if the mac is clueless regardless of unit used...

I need to get a software update, pcm calabration, pump learn and pressure relief valve counter reset following replacement of the PRV valve, because my vehicle is 3.5 tons my local Ford dealer will not carry out the work as they class as commercial. My nearest Ford commercial service department want a rip off £300 to do the work. Hence my original question as to whether a local garage with general diagnostics could do the work?

Not like ford to over charge

Any garage with FOrd IDS should be able to do it for you which is mainly going to be Ford specialists. There's quite a few forum members with IDS too so it may be there is someone local to you who can help. Either that or buy the tool to do it yourself, you can get one for £80ish upwards but it's a bit of a faff to get it all set up.

Thanks for the replies. I've found out that Ford did a recall for my model (08 2.2lt), so it's booked in for a free pcm calabration. The other bits I've found a guy thats fairly local with ids to do the job. Where can I get the equipment for £80 to do future work myself?

There's various clones of fords VCM hardware but the cheapest is the VCX Nano. There are however fake ones out there so try and find somewhere with reviews so you can make sure it's legit. I got one from AliExpress here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Arrival-100-High-Quality-VXDIAG-VCX-NANO-for-Ford-Mazda-2-in-1-with-IDS/32441799571.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.3.252745aaj4ME9Y&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10152_10065_10151_10344_10068_10130_10324_10342_10547_10325_10343_10340_10548_10341_10192_10190_10084_10083_10618_10630_10307_10301_10303_5722316_5711211_10313_10059_10184_10534_100031_10629_10103_10626_10624_10623_10622_10621_10620_10142,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&algo_expid=ac7a4b18-c3f5-4db2-a337-62c8bd1182e4-0&algo_pvid=ac7a4b18-c3f5-4db2-a337-62c8bd1182e4&priceBeautifyAB=0

You could also look at using ForScan. It's free software and does most of the stuff IDS does (Can't do ECU update but can do pump learn etc) You need to buy a ELM327 to use that but they are only £15

Thanks grogan.
Do I need the vcm hardware for forscan? If not do you know if it's available in an android app to use with a elm327 bluetooth adapter? Been looking at the ids software and most looks a bit confusing to set up! Do you know if a good obd2 reader would do stuff like pump learn and prv reset, or is the only option ids/forscan?

OBD2 readers are just that...readers, some can reset codes and scan real-time data etc but that's about it.

Forscan and a decent ELM327 is all you need. It will do ~90% of what IDS can do, including all the learns and valve resets etc... You can get Bluetooth ELM327's but be aware that they can be a bit "flakey" sometimes, plus the Android and iPhone apps don't have the full functionality of the Windoze based version.

I use an old W7 laptop with Forscan loaded on it and a "USB" cable type ELM327 and it works fine. TBH, Forscan is a lot more user friendly than IDS...don't get me wrong, IDS is brilliant if you can get it to work with a VCM-2 clone but we've had a lot of trouble with a lot of the Chinese clones...some work but a lot don't...it's a bit of a lottery.

That explains things really well, not everyone is a Ford technician! Time you buy the vcm2 (if you get one that works) your looking at about £100, so for working on your own vehicle Forscan looks like a good alternative.
