Intermittent loss of power 2008 (08) TDCi 2.0 140PS

Postby Andrewtheplumber » Sat Feb 17, 2018 7:18 am

Morning all
I'm suffering from an intermittent loss of power on my 2008 (08) 2.0 TDCi 140, 130k on the clock, which I've owned for 4 years. It feels to me like the turbo isn't always kicking in. This has been happening for a couple of weeks.

I've found that it's fine if I rev to 3.5k in 1st gear, change to second and keep the revs high, but if I short shift 1st & 2nd then try to accelerate in 3rd it sometimes won't go (but is equally sometimes fine). If I persevere with my foot to the floor, it'll usually take off and work normally from about 3.2k revs, and is then fine again for a while. It'll also clear if I change down.

No other symptoms - no flashing warning lights or error messages, no smoke out the tail (at least not visible in the mirror).

There's no pattern to it that I can find yet. It sometimes does it on and off all day, yesterday it did it in the morning but was fine in the afternoon.

Any ideas please? TIA

Just had it looked at by the garage, who have cleared the fault codes and sent me away to find out which ones come back again...

P2265 Water in fuel sensor/Faulty Signal/Current - this is a recurring issue which I think can be disregarded

P0404 EGR valve position control, performance or range fault/stuck in open position/intermittent

P068A ECM/PCM Power Relay De-energised Performance/No symptom/Intermittent

P0299 Turbo / Super Charger Underboost/No sympton/Intermittent

P0234 Turbo / Super Charger Overboost/No sympton/Pending

P0089 Fuel pressure control valve/Circuit low/Intermittent/Leak detected

Any ideas please?

I've noticed that if I sit idling for a few minutes the problem almost always appears when I set off again. Have done 2 return trips from Oxford to Exeter this week, never had an issue on the motorway but the problem did appear a couple of times, usually within 15-20 minutes of starting a journey

Turbo "overboost/underboost" is usually a duff EGR valve, either stuck open or closed, would explain your poor power issue too. You've also possibly got a duff SCV and PRV, all very common Mk7 problems and relatively easy to fix.

Water in fuel sensor fault is often cured with a PCM software update, which can/should be done in conjunction with the SCV & PRV valve replacement/learns procedure.
