Hacksaw type Noise!!!

Postby goons » Mon Feb 19, 2018 8:35 pm

Hi all
My 58 plate Transit seems to have developed a strange noise. It initially seemed to only happen when I turned the engine off.....and a noise from the engine sound like someone doing 6 or 7 strokes on a hacksaw is the best way I can describe it.

I've also noticed it now doing it when the van is in motion after I lift off the throttle.

It doesn't always do it, but definitely a few times a day.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated. :)

I have never heard mine "self clean" in the 3-4yrs i`ve owned it. How would i know if mine is fitted with that type? (other than the noise obviously)

Seems like the people with the high post counts think we should know everything about our transits!

One has to be patient! Some people have to work. Sooner or later someone always comes along with the info required :)

It’s supposed to make that noise, unless you have had an egr delete. Normal noises when switching off van

Don't take it personally...we like to give each other a bit of a raz every now and then...   We are friendly chaps...honest..!

The "Hacksaw" noise is normal...it's just the EGR valve doing it's "self-clean" routine, should happen every time you turn the engine off. I'm surprised you can hear it when the engine is running though :? They don't do the self clean thing when the engine is running :?:

Ok thanks for the info. I don't know why it does it intermittantly when it's running and also intermittently when I turn it off. Loud enough for people sitting in a car next to me in a car park to turn their head at the noise

If it's that loud, I'd suggest you may need a new one. The RWD ones are a ball-ache to get at though....easier with the inlet manifold off.
