What voltage are you reading when the engine is running and the battery light is on?

You could try getting it hooked up to a mk6 compatible scanner. It should have logged some codes if the voltage is going too high / low.

If the voltage is staying at around 14v when the engine is running and the battery light is still flickering then I suspect it will be a wiring issue, probably a short in the cable from the warning lamp to the alternator.

Does that mean the light could stay on even though there is no major problem?

All the voltage and belts are OK.

Yes it could mean there is no problem wih the charging system as such but if there is cable damage you would want to figure out where the cable is damaged and are others also damaged as it could easily turn into a big problem and a fire hazard if things start shorting out.

Here's a link to the Ford worksheet for working out why the light is staying on, with circuit tests etc. http://workshop-manuals.com/ford/transit_2000.5_01.2000-05.2006/mechanical_repairs/4_electrical/414_battery_and_charging_system/414-00_charging_system_general_information/description_and_operation/diagnosis_and_testing/charging_system_2.0l_duratorq-di_(puma)_diesel-2.0l_duratorq-tdci_(puma)_diesel-2.0l_duratorq-tddi_(puma)_diesel-2.4l_duratorq/
