Back wheel squeal driving me mad

Postby Birmingham » Fri Feb 23, 2018 12:05 pm

Morning lads. I have a mark 7, lovely runner, the only problem is this irritating squeal that comes when it’s warmed up. It sometimes takes up to an hour while driving, and I half do be thinking, bang on it’s gone, but the decker always returns. It’s on the back driver side. I thought it was a wheel bearing, but there is no grinding and it’s only when it seems to be warmed up. If I’m driving in a straight line it’s there, if I turn the wheel ever so slightly either way it goes, like sideways pressure is relieving the noise or the problem. I touched the back wheel and it was quite hot, which narrowed the problem down to the rear driver side. Checked pads and discs, they are fine. Just had it’s mot, nothing showed up at all. Could it be the brake calliper sticking? Or a dry bearing ? Zero grinding as I said, but I have to sort it, as it’s quite possibly the worst noise I’ve ever heard. Any advice would really help lads. Also it goes when I brake, when I release brake it’s instantly back..Thanks, chris

Check the runout with a dti on the brake disc. It's not unusual to get noises from the brake disc if the runout is over spec and it typically occurs once the brakes have warmed up. The runout should be no more than 0.1mm

DTI is a dial test indicator, you use it to measure the runout which is basically a measurement of if your brakes are running true. If they run with a slight wobble (excess runout) then the pads will rub against the disc and you will have uneven wear on the disc (not noticeable with the naked eye)

There's a guide on testing the runout here http://www.apecbraking.co.uk/getattachment/7c2582da-83bd-41be-8ecd-1ec73ea8ce8d/Understanding-Brake-Judder-and-Preventative-Steps.aspx

FWD or RWD..??

Also I wonder if the handbrake is holding on a bit?? Sticky cable or the caliper lever not going all the way off??

There was no travel hardly on the handbrake when I got it, hard to get one click. So I loosened the tensioner underneath the chassis. Now the handbrake light is on and only goes off if I apply pressure pushing down on handbrake when driving but as soon as I let the pressure off the light comes back on and the handbrake rises a little, like it won’t sit down properly. Do you think it needs slackening more ?
