Dead transit (mk7)

Postby MAC1972 » Thu Apr 05, 2018 11:31 am

Anybody give me any idea what’s wrong with my van!!!!?
Put a new battery on it couple of days ago as it seemed like the old one had died. Wasn’t turning over, voltage was zero, just put it down to it being an old battery as only had the van a year and don’t know exactly how old the battery is. Started fine after fitting the new one (day before yesterday). Went to start it 1st thing this morning and it struggled but did start. Went out a moment ago and it’s totally dead! Even the central locking won’t work. There’s nothing visibly on as in radio / interior lights etc. I got in the back of the van and locked it after fitting the new battery to check the light was turning itself off and it did. Driving me mad. Trying to sell it!
Cheers

You need to check there's power at the terminals then you need to check the seat battery fuses and so on.

You may have a bad connection to ground, check the front of the drivers seat on the drivers side there's a mounting bolt with the earth connection.

That's a start anyway.

You don't say which van you have, but is there definitely only one battery :?:

Hi

It’s a MK7 LWB high top. There’s 2 batteries but the other ones working fine, showing full voltage on my meter which is confusing me even more! No lights on. No radio turning itself on. The light in the back is turning itself off when the doors shut and the vans locked up...?!

The battery at the front near the pedals powers all of the systems, the battery near the back of the seat links to the front 1 when ignition position 2 and links the batteries for starting the vehicle.

Which did you replace?
Do you hear a click from the back of the seat when you turn the key to pos 2?

The best way to test the batteries is a drop test individually.

But, generally if either of the batteries are failing you still have signs of life in the lights and instruments etc.

Hi

It’s the back battery that seems to be the problem. Showing no voltage at all. (Nor was the old one, I assumed the battery was f***) new one is now flat as Zoe Balls chest after 2 days.just had a look and the cab interior lights and the radio are still working?!

You might need a spark to look at it. Might be batteries, earth, fuse, ignition switch or something draining them.

It shouldn't be dead totally which suggests a fault with connections but we can't know until checks are made :-(

Finally sorted it! Been driving me mad!
Essentially batteries and earths. 2 new batteries. Killed the 1st one in a day. 2nd one didn’t seem to last much longer. Disconnected 3 of the earths to the bodywork that were more rust than metal! Bit of sanding back to bare metal. Changed a few dodgy looking fuses. Voila! Like a different van!
