Van brakes on its own.

Postby crapmetal » Wed Apr 11, 2018 8:21 pm

Ok I've got a gremlin somewhere that I'm pretty sure is a sensor or calibration problem. After I start the van it puts the left front brake on briefly as I'm pulling away.

I'm not sure what is causing this but it seems to clear its self and drive fine after the first few seconds.

Any body got any ideas what this might be?

It's a 2012 mk7 fwd that has previously had its steering rack changed not sure if this is relevant but having searched and not found anything much all I can think is it's either a brake/wheel speed sensor or steering sensor.

Brake flex hose coming apart internally....some have had this before...or ABS module playing up.??

Thanks, they're both things I've not though of. Not even sure what to search for to be honest!

Seems like it's going to be a bugger to diagnose so probably an expensive garage bill.

Unfortunately they're nothing that can be seen externally... :? I suspect if the ABS module was playing up, you'd have a light and/or code to go with it...

The flex hose can easily be checked, just remove it, blow air through it from either end, it's either blocked in one direction or it ain't...and while it's off, just replace it with a new one to eliminate it as the problem.

is steering wheel perfectly centered when wheels are in a straight line? if not, it needs re adjusting using the track rod ends, then tracking re doing, as if its off slightly the steering angle sensor (used for ESP) will report a slight turn, either left or right, when there isn't actually one and trigger the brakes to compensate for a skid that isn't actually happening  :?

Andy no the steering wheel is out after the steering rack was changed, it's quite a bit out maybe between 10 and 20 degrees I've never messed with steering so I'm not sure how much adjustment is in the track rods.

That sounds exactly like whats happening though.

Well I'll find out if it was the steering soon enough, I've had the alignment sorted so if it carries on it must be something else.

Hi Paul it's definitely not torque steer. Thanks anyway.

Sometimes, but I haven't seen any correlation. Not been out much but this week but I'll update when I've worked out if it's solved with the steering alignment.

Ok well alignment didn't fix the issue so I guess further investigation is needed. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and find a garage to investigate it properly.

Get it on ids, get the steering angle sensor calibrated, get the longitudinal sensor calibrated.
Do the brake and esp lights come on and go out as expected?
When the left brake comes on initially is it quite violent and possibly makes a noise like you jamming the brakes on then goes away?

I had these symptoms when I changed my rear axle to a different ratio 1 and didn't recalibrate it.
That's probably not what you have but the guy did say there were too many codes stored in the module and needed clearing etc.

I guess ids means a trip to a better equipped garage I don't think my usual mechanic has it anyway, I'll have to check. My £12 code reader seems to work well for the price but I think it's a bit more basic than ids.

I could still try the hoses and abs module I suppose but I don't want to just keep throwing bits at it.

There's no lights on or any real issues other than the break playing up oh and unrelated but my windscreen cracked in the recent cold and wet :(. The newer the van the more problems I seem to get!
