loud knocking

Postby transitnewbie26 » Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:56 am

i have an 08 tourneo i brought 3 weeks ago. it was in amazing condition and drove like a dream not a noise or warning light but it broke down two days later and would not start, i took it to a transit specialist who said the turbo had blown oil pump was knackered and needed new cam assembly would cost £1500. got the van back yesterday and there is still a loud knocking but it does however start and drive. the guy said it could be the knocking is from the oil still not lubricating the parts fully and should wait a week to see if the knocking/ticking stops or it could be cam bearings. does this sound right to a transit expert? Im really worried in all ready £5500 in the hole and really cant afford to spend to much but i also need the van because iv six kids. can anyone help? or does anyone know a reputable mechanic in the Southend Basildon area?

thanks in advance

So they charged you £1500 and it came back knocking, why did you pay if it was knocking? they should do the job you've paid for and not give it back if there is a problem.

Sounds like a rip off merchant to me, they reckon they've fitted a new cam assembly but not the bearings, What mechanic worth his salt would use old worn bearings on a new cam?

Saying it could take a week for parts to get lubricated is complete and utter bollox!

Once the engine is started and the oil pressure is reached and oil light goes out (this takes under a second usually in a good serviceable engine, but a worn engine, or oil pump could take a few seconds to reach working pressure) then all the moving parts should be lubricated and there shouldn't be any knocking noises from anywhere in the engine.

If when you start it and its been running for 30 secs or more and its knocking then something is wrong!

What is your location? maybe we have a member nearby who could give you a second opinion

Sounds like a piston small end knackered, any knocking noise even if its a diesel knock will cause damage if not sorted, should never have left the garage and for them to palm you off with ridiculous excuses is shocking

Engine sounds like this  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePTvmrRIP40

If so take it back. It requires a complete engine rebuild or replacement :!:

i think it might be more of a ticking/tapping noise . im going to get a hydraulic lifter treatment in the morning praying it will do the job.

This engine don't have hydraulic lifter/tapets.

Overfueling resulting in piston crowns cracking/melting

Oil pump failure also leaves engine knocking & appears to be from top end.
On further investigation. Well see for yourself.....

This damage was the result of a faulty pressure release valve in oil pump.
