how much movement timing chain

Postby marc1234567 » Tue Apr 24, 2018 9:59 pm

2.4 2002 mk6 tddi 120/125 ps

I have a couple of people helping me but thought I'd ask here.

I was trying to tighten the right hand camshaft sprocket and I seem to have made the sprocket jump a tooth.

I did the first bolt and I noticed a bit of movement in the chain and the sprocket moving slightly , when i moved onto the second the chain was moving again
and I head a noise like the sprocket had jumped teetch . I checked timing and it was out by at least a tooth.

the timing chain has just been replaced. My friend was sure it could not have jumped out by it has . He was saying that the chain cannot go slack to allow it but I have noticed that the tensioner does move back in a bit.

another friend says it is not surprising that this has happened and said I should have held the sprocket in place. I have a tool that stops the flywheel moving, would that have prevented the sprocket fromjumping like that?

When was chain and tensioner replaced ? Any doubts about chain and tensioner then i would advise to change( use Genuine Ford chain and tensioner) and cant say for sure about sprocket jumping as I've only worked on fwd mk6 an 7s, but when I tighten the bolts the sprocket is still pinned

Oh. Makes sense. It probably says tighten with timing pins in manual. Does anyone know if it makes sense for chain to slacken andhave sprocket move like that?

The tensioner only has a keeper spring energising it without the oil pressure when the motor is running, it will move back to the next tooth on the rack if undue strain is put on the chain.

Inlet cam sprocket is the worst culprit as it has less than 80° tooth engagement - bit of a piss poor design really.

How have you maintained/ensured cam timing if the cams weren't pinned up?

friend did time with pins and told me to tighten up with locktite. first attempt i broke a bolt with the torque wrench , so it had to be timed again.

Yes it was the inlet.

the timing chain broke , long story , ended up getting a new engine. so fitting new engine is what I've been trying to do.

Is it a new timing chain and tensioner That you've put on replacement engine?? Is it correct torque setting for bolts

If it's a "new" engine...why does it need a "new" chain fitted..??

Sorry it is a replacement engine and new chain / tensioner.

Yes new timing chain and tensioner. Timing was redone and The torque settings were done correctly yesterday without any jumping. So I probably over tightened.
