Now seriously, what is THIS??

Postby WarthogARJ » Thu Apr 26, 2018 12:40 pm

three unkown in sump.jpg

OK inmates, I was behaving myself and fixing leaks on my van.
(2006 Mk 6 TD 2.0 no air con FWD RHD).

As I pull off the sump, I notice three bits of stuff in the sump that are NOT supposed to be there.
Well, I'm pretty sure not.....like not even in a Ford.

There MIGHT have been more pieces: like I pulled the sump off and was busy rinsing down my passages from the top valve cover to the oil sump/oil filter.
I've been drilling and adding glow plug helicoil, so was flushing away any debris.

But these guys were there, swimming in the oil, just chilling.

(1) Metal clip: well, it IS a metal clip, for what??? A sensor?
But INSIDE the engine??

(2) Brass piece: part of a sensor housing?
brass part.jpg

I'll look, but I don't THINK I'm missing any of them.
The Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor is brassy looking, but mine is still there.

(3) piece of metal casting: THIS has me a bit concerned....it LOOKS like part of a bearing.
P1010450 crop.jpg

P1010451 crop.jpg

So (3) is only PART of the "bearing" it came from.
Seems to be originally 18-20mm in diameter max.

So THAT means it's NOT part of a big end or small end bearing: is too small.
Like the small end (piston ring) is 30mm.
This is not that big.
All agreed?

Well, is hard to measure really accurately, but I REALLY don't think so.

So what else???
Is not from oil pump: that looks intact, and has a wire mesh screen that stops anything important falling out, or going in.
And I checked: wire mesh screen is intact.

Obviously not fuel pump.
Not water pump.
Don't have an air con.
Sortof makes you think it's fallen off Mr. Ford's Puma Duratorq.....but what??
And maybe fell off a while ago, and got fixed.....
Or MAYBE my Van ate another car, and this is all that's left?
Like maybe a small Fiat?
A scooter for a snack?
So maybe this was just in the oil sump being digested, a bit like boa constrictor does when it easts a frog??

Do Transits do that?

I had the Timing Belt cover off, but I don't THINK anything important had fallen off.
Like I wasn't looking for this specifically because I only saw this stuff AFTER I re-installed it.
And what else is there??
OK, like the tensioner, but the chain seems to run OK.

OK, so looking at the camshaft, and valve springs etc, they look OK.
Nothing obviously missing.

And it wasn't actually doing anything bad there.
Like there are lots of screens and filters that keep it there.
But I AM sort of puzzled....
Not quite puzzled enough to pull off Timing Cover again, or remove engine and put apart.
But puzzled.
Should I be worried???

Like OK, so maybe this stuff is necessary.
But what's worse that can happen?
Well, engine stops.
And I have to take it apart...sigh.
Well, might as well wait.

Maybe it IS part of a scooter the van ate....
Or maybe a KTM.
Now THAT makes sense: KTM sux.
KTM eaten.jpg

And I don't even LIKE scooters, I'm a big bike guy, a BMW guy...:-}

Any ideas?
I'm looking around inside with an Endoscope, and don't see anything obvious.

Well, I used to work on the oil rigs, and every now and then a roughneck would drop something down the hole.
Obviously all and sundry were VERY surprised when bits and pieces of smashed up pipe wrench or whatever eventually came up....or not.

This reminds me of that: somebody dropped these things in the top of the engine....but seriously, there's THREE different things:
(1) Clip
(2) Brass part
(3) Part of bearing

I wish I'd known BEFORE I put the timing cover back on: I'd have looked really closely there.
But it's a very simple Mk6 TDI.
And no air con.

So the timing chain is OK.
And I'm pretty sure the tensioner is: like the timing chain is still in nice order.
And this didn't just happen, I bet these things have been there for YEARS.
Like it's a 2004, with a long history of abuse at the hands of monkeys who claim to be mechanics.

Cam follower?
So I should be able to see that, right?
Like I've got my cam cover off, but not my cylinder head.

But this is like archaeology....ancient history maybe??
This is a 2004, and is now 2018.

With the cam cover off you should be able to see any broken followers, but with a bit that big missing I'm sure you would have noticed something, but it could be from a previous 'cam incident' and as you say been in the sump for years, so the current setup may hopefully be ok.

Thanks very much, guys.
Really appreciate that feedback.

I found another couple of fragments of the brass bit (in the container I dumped the oil in): I think it's a sort of bushing.
So maybe goes with the cam follower assembly.

And this seems to tie up with other stuff.
Is why the timing chain cover and sump were removed, and put back on (badly).
Both leaked.

Neither used a gasket, just sealant RTV.

In both cases I got new covers, that came with gaskets.
And used good ProTex Blue RTV (from Canadian Tire, no less....:-}
And was REALLY careful about cleaning off the old sealant.
If they, leak, I'll set fire to the Beast and collect on the fire insurance....

Ally bit with the grooves looks like a lifter bore.

Brass bit looks like a ball cage from a bearing.
