DMF or Not ?

Postby Steve4x4 » Mon Apr 30, 2018 2:48 pm

Is it possible to tell by looking through the starter or clutch lever hole if my current van has a solid flywheel fitted ?
It's a 2005 RWD diesel with the MT75 box.

It's got a bit of history from the previous owners saying it was recovered with a possible clutch fault. There is no mention of clutch replacement only that a new starter was fitted.

Since owning it It has not started properly a few times so I took the starter off and checked it and then noticed that the flywheel has been munch quite badly, possibly by the previous starter though. I think the best/cheapest plan would be to fit a solid flywheel kit, preferably a proper Ford one but could do with leaving it for a few weeks due to lack of money. I don't mind risking having to push it if it gets really bad but don't really want to wreck the gearbox or get stranded somewhere if the flywheel lets go.

My worry is that the dual mass flywheel starting to fail might have ruined the original starter and the new one has just hidden the flywheel problem, it doesn't get used much so things haven't got bad quickly.

Not sure if I explained properly.

The van should have a dual mass flywheel but might have had a single mass fitted.
Can you see into the bell housing anywhere well enough to be able to tell what it is without taking the gearbox out ?

I'll answer this myself, yes you can !

If you take the starter out you can see enough of the flywheel to work out if it is a dual mass one and also if it's loose. Mine is just starting to flop about and you can move it enough to touch the bit fixed to the engine.

I gave up in the end and decided to fit a new flywheel. I have partly stripped it but can't get the gearbox out as one of the bottom arm/subframe bolts is stuck.

If you lay the gearbox over on it's side it's possible to slide the gearbox back just far enough to get at everything - it does require the use of profuse bad language.

I just had the same problem removing my gearbox ended up using a very long pole on the wrench to undo the subframe, got the box off no problem putting it back was erm fun as it would catch on the insulation. I did this on my own using a ratchet strap and a jack.

Last time I went anywhere near a flywheel was 10 years ago and it was clearly a solid flat disk in a K10 micra. Got the gearbox off my van and about to order a new clutch but can anyone tell me from the pictures if this is a solid of dual-mass flywheel?

I’m going to whip the clutch and pressure plate off later and see if that tells me anything. Will report back but I still don’t know what a DMF is supposed to look like
