starter motor

Postby harry1x1 » Sat May 12, 2018 9:32 pm

Hi, i have a 2006 swb transit van, for some time the starter has made a grinding before it start nut after 2-3 try's it starts, to i try to start it i did a few turn overs and about the 3rd time it did not even do the grinding sound just nothing but all lights came on as normal but nor even trying to turn over.
Total my fault i know as should have sorted it ages ago.

Ok i don't know my way around vans much so my Q.S are.
1. Is starter now gone, which i'm sure you will say yes.
2. Could i remove it and do it myself? and what size spanners will i need to buy just for that one thing?
I had some quotes today £360.00 garage, £280.00 to come to my place to do it, just booked a holiday so skint for a while.
Been looking on line and i can get one form EURO parts £89.00, do you guys use euro parts or another company?
I live in London UK.

Thank you if you answer me. for taking time to do so.

If it's front wheel drive then it's a bit awkward to get the top bolt but easy after that. I got an rtx starter that was £45 it sounds different and sometime just misses the teeth and makes that metal sound, I got the one before that from a motor factors that was a recon ford unit and lasted years

13mm bolts holding it on but you'll need a socket and adapter for the top bolt

Just replaced mine on a 2006 rw drive . Pretty much all you need is a 13mm socket and 10mm spaner . Make sure you disconnect the battery before you start .
There are 2 x 13mm bolts that holds the starter than undo the main cable+other wire from the top solenoid bolt and wire from solenoid coil . A bit fidly to undo the top 13mm bolt but with a short 13mm spaner should be ok . If you want to do it the easy way than remove the small coolant hoses from the oil cooler and you will have plenty of room to work on it (BUT you will have to refill the lost coolant) .
