Mk6 Engine swap woes.....

Postby Sunbmw » Mon May 14, 2018 8:24 pm

Hi all, huge apologies for my first post being yet another fuel pump related one, but there might be someone who can save me some time.

So, I have started my own restoration business up, but, as ever, there has to be a few dirty jobs along the way, A, to help with the cashflow, and B, it was for family! Anyway, 55 plate 2.4 Duratorq Di RWD Hi roof, the engine is toast, nothing new there, and before I have any involvement in the job, they buy a donor van, which is exacly the same van, apart from it's a semi high roof, and its 2002. I then get roped in to swap the engine, and I explain first as last that it might not be "that" simple. At the weekend, I get both Vans side by side, remove both engines and start the task of seeing what is different. It seems that the later engine had a different EGR and inlet setup, so I transfered the whole lot including the loom across to the early engine, as the earlier loom had an additional sensor/plug in the EGR housing. Ok, so, all buttoned up, engine back in, all fluids changed etc, new fuel filter etc, shes a non-start, and I am getting the typical Glow-plug lamp flash. I now plug in my Delhi diag gear, and after having deleted a mass of codes, I am now stuck with the Fuel pump Watchdog sensor fault. So, the only thing I haven't transfered from the original engine is the pump, Is this the problem? I know the older type pumps were programmed to the key, but I thought that that was all controlled by the ECU nowadays?

Look forward to your replies.

Di pumps have to be coded to the pcm (ecu) you have two options 1, code the pump to the pcm 2, swap the pcm, locks and transponder from the donor van.
Also the 55 plate will be digi dash whereas the 02 plate will be analogue, I believe they are not compatible with the pcm (2002 pcm won't work digital clocks and vise versa) I could be totally wrong though. N

Or just fit the pump from original engine if you haven't swapped the pcm. N

I've just done exactly the same thing but I also swapped the ECUs over and the ignition key and sensor. van runs but speedo revcounter doesnt work. Going to put the original ECU back in and get it coded. Pig of a job, isn't it? :D

Thanks guys. Yeah, its a ball ache, but nothing i'm not used to!

I guess coding the key to the pump is a job for someone with access to FOCOM software?

Just swap the original pump to the original van/ECU/PATS.

Why didn't you not just use the complete engine and loom out the donor and swap the key chip

So, bit of an update.

I had had so many conflicting views, so I took the bull by the horns, and swapped the pump. So now, basically every part from the original engine is on the donor engine, but she is still a non-start.

I am now getting the immobilizer light flashing when I attempt to start, it cranks but won't fire, and yes, I am aware of how much of a bitch they can be to get fuel up.

My diag software now says in the fuel and immobilizer section that incorrect data to the pump ir some such.

Any ideas? Is it worth me trying the spare key?

Please help as I have no hair to pull out as it is!!!!

Thanks Karl. I spent half the day yesterday swapping the pump in the vain hope I wouldn't have to code the keys!!!!

Anyone know of anyone mobile, local to Ashbourne in Derbyshire that could do this? We have used 3D Autokeys for new keys etc at work, wonder if they could do it......

Check the wiring to the pump isn’t damaged, and that the multi plug is fully connected

Hi everyone. So, she's sorted. I ended up borrowing a very good friend's Snap-on Versus, which programmed the pump to the PCM, all good.

Thanks for the help every body, really appreciate it.
