Boat with transit engine

Postby 000davesinclair000 » Sat Jun 02, 2018 10:37 pm

Hi guys looking for a bit of help, my dad has a boat with a transit engine now he went to start it the other day And didn’t realise there was a bit of wiring hanging down, this got caught on the pulley and tore it off somewhere, the engine turns over but won’t fire, we have a live and earth that we can’t see where it goes, the fuel filter housing has a 3 pin connector on the bottom And the pins look clean would this make sense ?

I’ll try sticking some pictures on

You don't say which Transit engine, but I'm guessing that it's an older, non electronic, non turbo, Di diesel :?:

If that's the case, the only (thin) wire that will stop it starting, is an ignition fed live that goes to the stop solenoid on the back of the injection pump. Without it connected to 12v, the pump can't get any fuel delivered.
The wires to the bottom of the fuel filter are simply for a "water in fuel sensor" and have no impact on the engine starting.

As Al said you only need a live feed to the injection pump stop solenoid on the back of the pump to start the engine and power to the starter motor obviously.

In your last picture of the engine bay above, the pump is sitting under the air filter, (directly under the clip at 5 o'clock) and there appears to be a thin yellow wire heading in the direction of the stop solenoid, which is directly on the back end of the pump.
You need to check that this is actually connected to said solenoid, and that there is 12v on that terminal when the ignition is on.

If not, try putting 12v on the terminal using a fly lead from the battery, and see if the solenoid clicks (*don't touch this wire on anything else, or it may melt rapidly*)

Which pulley did the cable wrap around :?: ,if its the bottom pulley at the front of the engine it might have jumped the timing
On the sixth day God created a Sprinter on the seventh he gave it away and bought a TRANSIT
