no drive

Postby hibbo11 » Wed Jun 06, 2018 6:34 pm

Good evening, I have a 2001 transit based camper, single rear wheel, on a recent trip I braked as I went into a layby and the rear o's brake locked and skidded and this happened about 3 or 4 times in about an hour, parked up for the night and drove home steadily the next day, tried to make it do it again the next day but all seemed fine.
Decided to have a look and see if I could find a problem, looked at the ns first but couldn't get the brake drum off so turned the van around and jacked up the o's to find the brake locked and I couldn't turn the wheel at all.
So I thought start it up put in gear to move the drum and see if it releases.......... nothing happened. put in gear let the clutch out nothing got out still in gear ticking over nice ns wheel on the ground o's wheel jacked up nothing moving. The only thing I can think is the half shaft is busted, but could I have driven from Wales like that??????
HELP first of all how can I get the brake drum off. HELP.

I thought the drive went to the side of least resistance and would expect to see the jacked wheel rotating , ....I'm confused.

Locking rear brakes is often caused by a broken brake spring.

Is the propshaft turning?

Jack up the van so both wheels are off the ground and then turn one wheel, the opposite wheel should turn the other way.

I have known vehicles with a broken half shaft to still drive, but usually acompanied by a grinding or knocking sounds.

Thanks for the reply,
Problem is it's in my drive and I can't get to both sides at the same time,
No grinding or other noises and it drove from Wales to Sussex.
Question is how can I get the drum off to look now it won't turn ?

I think the drum is stuck on the hub not on the shoes because I can turn it, if it was stuck on the Shoes it wouldn't turn correct?

Well I've done it, thanks for the information those that replied, the answer was heat and a bigger hammer but at 71 years of age there's a limit to the size of hammer you can swing whilst laying under a vehicle :? the problem is a lining has detached from the shoe.
Pleased I can now get on with fixing it :D
