Citreon relay, 2.2 transit engine

Postby Kyle101 » Mon Jun 18, 2018 3:03 pm

Hi guys just after some advice on the above^ engine

On cold start I seem to get quite abit of smoke and a clangy idle (perhaps even missing) after a few mins of revving the engine the smoke goes but it still clangs untill it gets warm then its absolutely fine im fully aware these engines are no known for problems but its served me well for 120 thou with no issues seems to of come on since having my injectors changed, any advice or experience on this would be much appreciated and im able to provide videos if easier, thanks

Have a look and see if the injector clamp bolts are tight

If not, you may need to replace and tighten the bolts as they're single use only :)

Or possibly a dead glow plug or two

ahh right well my glow plugs dont actually work mate :D so my van doing what its doing is because of glow plugs then hence the over fueling?

have the new injectors been coded in ?? and new learns done ???
Glow plugs are ON only for a short time ( a few seconds at the start up ) than they are turned OFF by the bcm .

Hi mate thanks for the reply, yes the injectors have been coded and ive done them again to make sure, and no for some reason it came saying Error 88 on a friends snap on when trying to learn them however I did discover the other day from having a play about that the van doesnt smoke when injector 1 is unplugged could this be the reason for the rough idle?

It could be something wrong with injector no 1 but I would check compression first on all cylinders . When you unplug the injector it will be closed and doesn't allow any fuel to go trough therefore no combustion .
If has a rough idle with injector 1 pluged in could be something wrong with piston , cylinder , valves ...or injector 1 .
Compression test will determine if mechanicaly cylinders are ok

Thanks mate it doesnt stop having a rough idle when i unplug the iniector it just makes it less rattley and reduces the smoke to a tiny bit. I cant say ive ever had cylinders checked but i have had it at a engine specialist engineer firm and he was confident that it wasnt a job for him meaning piston wise it was okay i did make the mistake of buying second hand injectors mate whether that could be the issue. If I send you a link pal would u like to have a listen yourself from when its rattley smokey on cold start to when its warm because the light tapping does sound like an injector issue, thanks

Not sure and doesn't sound to good . I would start with having the injectors tested than compression test if still no good .
It could be big end bearings (hopefully not). Sorry that is all I can suggest . Maybe other guys on here can be more helpful .

I haven't had the displeasure of owning anything newer than the superior Mk5 :D

Video sounds like top end (although you didn't rev it)
If the oil pressure light is going out then the bottom end is ok for now.

Tapping could be rockers or diesel knock (top end)

The newfangled vans have hydraulic lifters?
1 or more could be worn or gummed up.

When was the last oil change and learns on the fuel system?

Any codes stored?
