Half shaft seal?

Postby ballihoo » Mon Jun 25, 2018 12:10 pm

Hi all,
Got oil on nearside rear hub and inner side of wheel.
I gather it’s the half shaft seal?
Do I need to change the bearing when doing this?
I see I will need 65mm socket.
Any other surprises I should expect?

Afternoon all

So I changed my half shaft seal. Old one looked bit of a mess and looked like it had been forced into place pretty badly.
All went pretty well, apart from trying to clean all the sealant off everything that they chucked on the gasket last time. So much so it was helping to stick the rear wheels together.
I was hoping that the problem was poor job done last time, but the problem has not gone away. It’s still leaking.
Any ideas why this is. The oil does look pretty cloudy brown. I just topped up last time so didn’t change the oil.

Any ideas?

I read these can’t be over tightened due to the ‘spacer’. Is that true?
I can’t figure out why it’s leaking still.

Yes used a genuine one.
I thought maybe the hub nut wasn’t torqued enough so have tighten that up. But it still leaks. The only thing I can think is to try again with a cheaper one.
Just hassle and wasted time though.

Check the axle breather is not blocked and for any damage to where the seal runs

Had a look at the breather and all seems fine. Pipe looks in good condition
