mk6 pick up non starter

hi folks ,hope your well hopefully someone can help my mate bought a 2004 pick up tdi engine ,tail lights not working so with engine running he was messing around behind multiswitch for lights ,said he heard a pop from dash fusebox area and engine cut out, tried to restart ,engine doesn't turn over digital display for mileage shows a line of dots when key turned checked all fuses all ok I towed him round the block with clutch out (no bump start) still wouldn't start any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Did you check the engine bay fuse box

Is it OK to do this? I know they say never bumpstart a MK6 Diesel, is that just the 2.4 TDCi.

Is it OK to just drag it round in say Second gear if the starter motor failed? or is it a risk you were willing to take :-)

You might get away with it if you pull from a dead stop in 2nd or 3rd gear, clutch out....it's the sudden hit at the drop of the clutch that causes greif.

Ta,

Third gear is best, and tow the van from rest without touching the clutch (until it starts!), this gives the hydraulic chain tensioner time to pressurise the timing chain.
Dropping the clutch suddenly, whilst being towed, is a recipe for disaster on any post 2000 diesel engine :shock:

checked all fuses ,engine bay and under dash can hear a faint click next to engine fusebox when turning key I bridged the starter with a screwdriver ,made a whirring noise but didn't turn engine over ive got an f super and formidable ill plug it in when I get a chance and see what comes up

hi folks checked all fuses and relays with multimeter all good plugged in no codes mate plugged in snap on reader no codes pats light where speedo is flashing every second or so ,no change to light when turning key .wee bit baffled now im alright with a spanner but the electrics on these are a bit of a minefield

hi folks me again update on pick up still wont start when engine was running i read codes with f super ,threw up quite a few,cant remember codes after fault there were no codes What is it that generates the codes ecu? if so is this where i should be looking? also no change with pats light ,not recognising key? if i replace ecu ,key,ignition ring from donor van do they need programming? any help with this would be greatly appreciated cheers
