Transit Hi Beam performance 2005

Postby iank » Wed Jul 11, 2018 4:38 am

Hi Folks,

Back tinkering with my MK6? 2005 dual wheel dual cab transit.
The high beam on its own is ok long distance but has poor close in fill.
If its on low beam and I bring up hi beam as well, the combination of the two is pretty good.

So I am wondering if anyone has made any mods to keep the low beam active when on hi beam?

thanks
Ian

I remember doing this with a Triumph 2000 back when I had hair. On the T 2K It was just a matter of adding a relay to switch on the second set of headlights (there were four headlights, two for main and two for dipped. It worked fine but it used a lot of power and I found on the longer journeys, it just wasn't worth the extra drain on the battery and I didn't really need the extra light either, however it was fun to play. With that car I disabled the Overdrive disable button so I could have overdrive in all the gears, then I found that Overdrives don't work in reverse :-) You live and learn!

Good Luck,

Did the relay mod to my mk1@2 escorts back in the day it reduced the life of the bulbs I thought about doing it to my vans but with them having plastic lens and reflectors I was not sure if the extra heat would discolour the lens

Good Luck,

Thanks Appyarry,
I too had considerably more hair back then. If it was an older Triumph generation capacity might be a problem but I would have thought the
later alternators would be up to it. Interesting re the overdrive mod,

Yes thanks for the reply. I was wondering if the bulbs can cope with both on, guess with both on its twice the heat isnt it
Yes acrylic lenses but there does seem to be a big area inside the lens.

Its just so much better with the 2 running.

thankyou :)

With lots of mk6s in breakers yard for new lights maybe worth a go just keep a pair of spare bulbs in the van .

You'll go through bulbs like fook , I'd fit better bulbs and fit fog lamps or fit the small spotlights you get cheap on ebay now , fit them low down to work with main beam and your problems sorted
