urgent help needed please

Postby Mac1984 » Fri Jul 27, 2018 7:37 pm

Hi all

I have a big problem with my 1998 2.5 TD.

It is all of sudden burning oil like mad.

Im talking something like a liter per 100 km or maybe more... Took a almost full canister to get me back home.
Now the engine is bone dry again... Opening the oil filler cap it smells burned from the inside..

The rear of my van is black. Completely black.

The engine sounds normal when running.

Any thoughts? Head gasket or piston rings?

Im stumped as this came out of the blue. .

Thanks for your help

The fact that it's burning oil would make me think that it's probably blue smoke which you are seeing in which case it could be your turbo seals failing.

Have a look at the rocker shaft I think a plug may have fell out letting to much oil into the top of the engine

Thanks so much for your inputs..

It was smoking white first and then black.

It started with a howling/hissing and then clappering sound before it smoked white and then black..

Well i guess first action maybe would be taking off the rocker cover and see what the story is..

First stop would be the turbo check for exsesive oil in the manifolds & hoses, check for too much end float and side movement.

I would be checking the turbo as well given the fact you say the back of the van is black  N

Cheers guys

It could be the turbo all right... There is loads of oil in the intake pipe..

Thats all i have checked so far..will take a closer look tomorrow...

Hard to believe the turbo can burn so much oil in such a short time..

It doesn't burn it, it just pumps it into your intercooler and then your engine where it's burnt.

I've seen a 7.6lt engine drink about 40lt of various oils (everything we had even gear oil) over a couple of hours driving just to get us back (recovery was not an option....)

Cheers guys

I took a look into the turbo

The turbine wheel has razor sharp edges.. I assume it kissed the housing ;-)

It will take me a while to source a new turbo i assume..

I am thinking of going non turbo until i have a new one, since i need to go to work tomorrow..

My idea was to just take the inside of the turbo off, blank it so it is basically a normal exhaust,

And blank the sump off also.

Will there be any need to blabk the return line to the engine block also?

I dont have a fitting plug for it, so i hope i can get away with just putting a plastic bag or something around it to prevent dirt ftrom getting in.. But i am not sure if there will be pressure building up from the inside of the engine when i start..

Well lets see how it goes..

I've removed the guts and put a bolt through the center to seal the inlet from the exhaust and the oil gallery it got me to the pole but it wasn't pretty.
