Overheating with hole in the block!!

Postby olstonsurf » Wed Aug 08, 2018 5:36 pm

Hi
I have a 2008 tipper and while driving to a job a few weeks ago in the heat the van started to cut out intermittently, I think it’s because it was over heating.
So when I got back the yard I noticed it was leaking water from somewhere. I took it to a garage and they said it had a small hole in the block from a bad cast! So they put k seal in and told me I need a new engine. I’ve been driving around locally since and the leak hasn’t come back, however the other day when I stopped, water was spraying out of the water reservoir so it was actually boiling!!

Im wondering if the overheating has made the initial hole in the block?
The temperature dial never goes past halfway.

I’m going to get a recon engine but don’t want it to just happen again if the problem is the cooling system .

Does anyone have any info or had a similar problem?

Thanks in advance/

Which engine do you have..?? Wouldn't happen the be FWD..? Unlikely if it's a tipper though.

Unlikely overheating will blow a hole in the block, they're cast iron and the cooling system pressure will only be ~21psi. It's possible it was originally a poor/thin casting and it has possibly rusted out from the inside..??
These engines don't have coolant temp sensors, they're actually "CHT" (cylinder head temperature) sensors. I'd be thoroughly checking the cooling system, making sure the pump and radiator are up to snuff before spending my hard earned on a reco engine.

If the block is indeed split or cracked...I'd say it was terribly bad luck....not much help I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply. It’s a rear wheel drive. It must be bad luck!!
There is a lot of sh*t stuck to the radiator ( looks like solid mud) it’s been like that since I bought it last September off a builder, I’ll get the cooling system checked and see if the k-seal holds up I think.

Garage said it wasn’t a core plug but a porous block.

If the Kseal is holding for now find the hole /holes and either slap some "chemical metal" over it,
get it professionally welded, weld it yourself, drill and tap (if it's 1 hole) and screw a tapered thread bolt in.

Or bite the bullet and put a replacement short block/full engine in :( :(

If youv'e cooked the engine a few times then the latter might be the best option :(

Thabks for the replies.
It sure if it’s behing the turbo, the mechanic had to take the alternator etc off to find it. The initial leak was on the drivers side.
