Engine Oil

Postby Davsal » Sun Aug 12, 2018 3:22 pm

Hi,
I have a Transit 2010. Oil light started to flicker so I checked the dipstick, couldn't see any oil so I went and got some oil. I have now poured 2.5 litres in and still can't see any oil on the dipstick. How much oil can they take because i don't want to overfill.
Thanks
Dave

Seriously you've ran it until oil light came on..... With 2.5 ltrs in it should be showing something unless its bone dry

The van runs fine with no issues. I haven't checked the oil for 18 months!!!!
I have just read that the oil tank capacity is 6.14 litres.....i think.
I will pour some more in.
Thanks for all the replies
Much appreciated.
And yes......i will check the oil level on a more regular basis.

18months you say! That's murder on the engine. By my standard, you should check your engine oil and water level at least twice a month even if you ride it as a car i.e. with the van not carrying any load.
I suggest you drain out whatever oil you have left in the sump, change the oil filter and add new oil to required level.

Thanks everyone for your help.
It actually took the whole 5 litres.
Dipstick showing about 3/4 full.
I think I was lucky.
Thanks again

Post up your reg so everybody no,s never to buy your van
It will look have damaged your engine no doubt about it but if you are planning on keeping it I would be keeping a very close eye on the oil level, personally I’d be getting rid ASAP.

yeh i dont even think twin wheel campers comment is outragess, i actually agree. when the oil light comes on, it means there is a pressure issue, if there is a pressure issue caused by lack of oil supply, its practically game over for the main journals, unless u litteraly stop the second the light shows up.
I'd probably also recomend selling it now. or better still, having the sump removed and bearings replaced from the bottom.
Its jsut so incredibly bad for the bottom end. If u just keep driving it now, after tha t small incident, it is quite likely that the small damage that was made to the soft aluminium bearings during that oil pressure incident, will soon make itself an issue to the harder crankshaft journal, which relies on perfect clearances to make a cushion of oil under pressure during the hydrodynamic lubrication phase.
In light aircraft, when an oil pressure incident is noted, the aircraft is grounded and all bearings inspected for damage, becasue its very likely to become a seized engine soon.
Not wanting to worry you, jsut do the bare minimum, and have the bearings inspected.

This isn't possible with the transit engines....they have an aluminium strengthening plate between the sump and block which makes it impossible to get at the mains and big-ends....so pretty much an engine out job.

Not striped on myself but the main bearings cap bolts into the cast iron block as knobby says it’s a aluminium strengthening plate also what’s wrong with it there are loads of alloy engine out there
