NO IGNITION - RADIO STILL WORKS

Postby landscaperdave » Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:13 pm

FIRST POST ON FORUM & LOOKING FOR SOME ADVICE ON MY 1995 TRANSIT TIPPER (127,000 MILES). BEEN USING EVERY DAY FOR LANDSCAPING WORK & SOMETIMES RECENTLY DIDN'T START TIL 2ND TURN OF KEY BUT GENERALLY A GOOD RUNNER. ON SITE YESTERDAY AND TRIED TO START BUT GAVE OUT A FIZZING SOUND (NO BURNING SMELL THOUGH) FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN ALL IGNITION LIGHTS WENT OUT & NO HOPE OF STARTING BUT COULD STILL TURN RADIO ON. CHARGED BATTERY (FORD) OVERNIGHT & TRIED TO START AGAIN THIS MORNING & SAME THING HAPPENED. TOOK BATTERY TO BE TESTED - APPARENTLY ON ITS LAST LEGS - GOT NEW ONE AND TRIED AGAIN - GUESS WHAT!! SHORT FIZZ AGAIN THEN ALL IGNITION & DASH LIGHTS GONE BUT STILL HAVE RADIO & CENTRAL LOCKING. CHECKED ALL COLOURED (SEE-THROUGH) FUSES WITH NO OBVIOUS ONES GONE - ANYONE KNOW WHICH OF THE CHUNKY BLACK ONES MIGHT BE RELEVANT? ONLY OTHER BITS OF INFO THAT MIGHT AFFECT THINGS ARE FAULT ON DRIVER'S HANDLE - WILL LOCK ON KEY FOB BUT WON'T OPEN FROM OUTSIDE & OLD OIL LEAK MEANS A REGULAR FILM OF OIL OVER ENGINE BLOCK.

CHEERS FOR ANY ADVICE

Sounds like one or more of your glowplugs has gone short circuit, and is robbing power from the starter motor. Check to see if the fusible link near to the jump start point has burnt out.

Remove the glow plug relay and try starting it again

Could this possibly be some kind of ignition barrel problem?

The ignition "switch" often gives trouble...not the barrel itself.....the switch lives on the back of the barrel...cheap and easy to replace.
However, it's not really related to the glow plugs....it supplies power to all systems.

1995 with glow plugs must be an early prototype mk6 Al
