replaced centre bearing but vibration and noise worse

Postby gasbo » Sat Aug 18, 2018 10:08 pm

Just wondered if prop shaft needs balancing and if garage did it right? Back axle could be on its way out i guess, bearings ,diffs...is it worth replacing any of these or would it be best to get another complete axle? there is a firm in wolverhampton that specialises in this sort of work so may take it there...Shelleys

I had this on my mk5 after replacing the carrier bearing there is a small vibration, in truth it was there before the carrier bearing was replaced ( probably the reason they failed ) but the worn carrier bearing was hiding the vibration but now with it held tight I can feel the vibration :x
Like mine there’s probably a joint abit worn or the shaft might need balanced.

my carrier bearing (mk5) is missing half of it, the rubber bit is just spinning around freely inside the outer shell, and i get no vibration, just a jerking start in frist gear some times if i dont baby it wiht the clutch :/
If a cross bearing is worn bad enough to make a vibration, the vibration is usualy at its worst at a particular vehicle speed, usually up above 70kph and is usualy more of a billowing HUMM.
Also if it is worn bad enough to cause a vibration like this, then you should be able to detect it wiht your hands under the vehicle. There should be visible freeplay if its bad enough to be making noise.
If there is no visible play in the cross bearings themselves, while turning the propshaft back and forth, then consider the issue to be the new centre bearing, or an out of phase shaft, perhaps the splined slider has been inserted a tooth off.
It is possible that the shaft has been damaged during removal. If a technician dropped it, its likely to be unservicebale.

Prop bent?

Balance weight fallen off? - look for a cleaner patch near the ends.
