Fuel pump replacement for a newbie mk 6 f3fa

Postby dudejb46 » Tue Aug 21, 2018 1:57 am

Hi all, ive got a 2004 mk6 2.0 duratourq f3fa the fuel pump died on me, so i decided to buy the timing tool and do it myself! Pump bought form local diesel specialist. Okay so after searching the forum i found this fantastic how to i shall now copy below, but i had a couple of questions surrounding it.
1. Do i need to lock the engine out with a pin in the crank position sensor hole as i heard some places?
2. Should i do this job battery disconnected?
3. When finished how would you best recommend bleeding the system i have no inline ballcock its totally standard?
4. There was a fourth question im sure it will come to me.
Many thanks
John

1. Use tool on left to remove inspection cover by inserting the three pegs into the three holes on cover, turn a quarter turn anticlockwise and remove cover plate.
2. Leave rear pump to engine mounting bracket done up at this point, turn engine over clockwise using crank pulley bolts and a spanner until the pump timing pin lines up (6 mm pin or drill bit) there is a hole in the offset middle of the sprocket, and it lines up with a slot in pump shaft which in turn should line up with a hole in the engine behind the sprocket when all is correctly positioned. Also the little recess hole on the outer edge of the sprocket near the teeth should be at about the 2 o'clock position
3. When correctly aligned, so as timing pin can be inserted, the three bigger holes through the edge of the sprocket, should line up with the three pump torx bolts behind.
4. Insert the holding tool on the right, back bits towards sprocket, if you look at it you'll see it engages the timing cover and twists in to place just like the cover plate did, so turn it to hold it to the cover, and as you do so, the three holes giving access to the torx bolts, should align with three holes in the holding tool. Then using a long (t50 i think) torx bit inserted through the holes, you should be able to undo the pump bolts. (yes they go through from inside the timing cover behind the sprocket, towards the pump) They will NOT be able to fall out or be removed from the engine, but MUST be undone fully. Remove the timing pin if this is still inserted.
5. Insert the three short locking pins in the kit, into the three holes in the tool and through into the three holes in the sprocket, dont push them in all the way, they will just sit there loosly.
6. Undo the 4 sprocket to pump mounting bolts and remove them completely, they should be accessible through the holding tool.
7. remove the rear monting bracket on the pump holding it to the engine block (by the injection pipes) and then pull the pump out streight away from the timing cover, being carefull not to catch the big centre shaft nut on the sprocket and nock it out of alignment.

8. re fit is a reverse of the above, make sure the pump is Loosly bolted to its rear bracket, BUT before inserting the sprocket bolts, rotate the pump using the big centre shaft nut, untill the slot in the edge of the pump shaft aligns with the timing holes as mentioned above. You should be able to insert the timing pin to make sure / hold it there untill you tighten the sprocket bolts. Then insert the sprocket bolts and tighten, remove timing pin, sprocket holding pins from kit, tighten pump torx bolts, and continue in reverse from there. DO NOT tighten the rear bracket until you have checked the timing pin still goes in ok, if so tighten everything up.

After finishing replacing everything, and before you fit the inspection cover, rotate engine 2 full turns using the crank pulley, and then check that the timing pin goes in on the pump once again (very slight jiggling left and right of the pump might be needed, so long as it looks aligned you'll be ok.) Fit cover, keep fingers crossed
