oil pressure warning light

Postby simon789 » Tue Sep 18, 2007 9:26 am

My oil pressure warning light has recently come on. Have flushed engine and changed oil and filter, but the light still remains on. I am thinking about changing the oil pump, do I have to remove the engine for this. Also, I've heard of an oil pressure relief valve or something that may be faulty and might be worth changing or checking first, where is it located?
Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

It's worth changing the oil pressure switch first. The switch has a rubber diaphragm which pushes the contacts open under oil pressure. If this diaphragm splits there is nothing to push the contacts open any more and the light stays on. Dead cheap anyway. John G

The first thing you should consider doing is getting the oil pressure checked.

If the pressure is ok, you have a fault on the switch or the wiring

If it's down, you need to have a serious think about the condition of the engine after driving with the light on.

The oil pump can be replaced with the engine in plate, it's a time consuming job which will need the cam belt taking off and then the crank pulley and oil pump cover.

The pressure relief valve is separate from the oil pump, look down at the engine block on the injection pump side.....between the block and the alternator you'll see a big hexagon.....undo that and you'll find a spring and piston inside.
