P1170 Diesel Injection Fault

Postby WayneB » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:20 am

Hi.. I have a 1999 Ford Transit 2.5 Turbo Diesel Manual Transmission. It came up with a fault lite and went into LHM mode. When tested the code was P1170 A/F Mixture Control but I have found that this fault is related to the ESO (Electronic Switch Off) Solenoid. I have tested the wiring to the computer and the solenoid. It reads 1.5 ohms at the injector pump across pins 2 and 3 and the same at the connector to the computer pins 38 and 48. The earth to the computer pins 54 and 55 is ok and the relay in the aux. fuse box is ok. The only problem that I can find is that the seal on the ESO solenoid plunger is broken. Can this cause the fault or should I look at replacing the computer. I have tried another Injection pump from a wrecking yard. They tell me this pump was from a Transit that was working with no fault lights.

Change the plunger seal,if ecu can`t stop engine using ESOS it moves pump rotor to no fuel position to stop it.
This will log a fault,if seal is torn on end of plunger it may not cut of fuel supply.....

Do a search using "ESOS" you will find some useful threads. :)

85,100 or 115PS :?:

The usual false diagnosis  Lucky you're on the ball and worked it out :!:

Should be pins 38 and 47 :!: :o

Exactly as Frag has stated :!:

And you must make sure that the calibration of the pump is the same :!: Or it will stay in LHM :(

You would have been better off swapping out the plunger :!:

Further to this, we have found from experience on this forum, that if you stall your van and turn the key off, the ECU is fooled into thinking the fault has been fixed and thus full power is temporarily restored :!: :D :wink:and confirms that the problem is the ESOS

Where did you get your pump and ECU pin numbers from :?: (if you don't mind me asking :?: )

The pumps were from the same model Transit and they have the same model on the pumps. I don't think these models have the pump calibrated to the ECU as the calibration resistor isn't connected back to the ECU. I got the pin numbers from the workshop manual. Pins 47 and 48 are connected together in the wiring loom. I suspect that the second pump has the same fault. I will find out when I remove it again. Can you buy a seal kit for these pumps or do you have to buy a new solenoid pack?

I maniaged to source an ESOS plunger kit for AU$20.00 and when I put it in my original injector pump it fixed the problem. The van is running now at full power and when I turn the key off it stops immediatly.
Thanks for all your help

The Solenoid Plunger Kit is a DELPHI part 9109-738B Barcode 5050100006063.
The Workshop manual is from Haynes Title - "Ford Transit Diesel Feb 1986 to 1999" ISBN 1 85960 586 9.

I appreciate that this is an old post, but since it has been 'revived' and is likely to be viewed more frequently now, it seemed prudent to offer a reply.

EPIC component 'pin-out' and testing date can be found here;

viewtopic.php?f=31&t=150748

If this does differ from the info you have in your book then it would be useful for all forum members if we include the data you have in the thread so as to make the thread as helpful as we can for all :D

When we supply a replacement ESOS plunger we include a new spring, naturally this weakens in use and on at least one occasion the customer managed to misplace the spring while changing the plunger

TIM

PS. The Delphi part number mentioned in earlier posts is now 'obsolete' :(

I've noticed that the 9109-738 is hard to get but is there anyone who knows if the ESOS plunger is included in the full overhaul kit (7135-237) ?
