MT - 82 six speed gearbox

Postby erniech » Mon Jan 19, 2009 1:13 pm

Can anyone tell me if the MT 82 six speed gearbox that is used in the rear wheel drive Transits (04 onwards) is identical or not to the MT 82 used in the 07 onwards Land Rover Defender (except for the transfer case adapter of course)?............Or at least can anyone put me onto someone that could tell me for sure?

If it is different....how is it different?

1 x 2001 SWB Petrol

Thanks for that.

The gearstick shift and cable shift would be a difference between the 04 and 07 Transit MT 82 for sure.

Can anyone tell me then is the 04 Transit gearstick shift MT 82 the same as as the gearstick shift MT 82 in the 07 on Land Rover Defender?

Dont know about the Land Rovers but an 04 Transit MT82 (gear stick type) has detents for the reverse gear selector (to stop selecting reverse instead of 1st) whereas the later MT82's fitted to the MK7 Transit with gear cables doesnt have detents for reverse as it has the collar on the gear lever to lift up when selecting reverse (also the later mk7's have a different selector mechanism inside the box)

So I would say it depends on the Land Rover if it has a direct gear stick fitted to the gearbox which when selecting reverse is a case of 'knocking it past 1st into reverse' or if it has a cable set-up with a collar to lift for reverse

Yes , The Land Rover definitely has a gearbox mounted gearstick...not a cable setup.

How does it select reverse, do you have to lift a collar or just 'knock' it into reverse :?:

It definitely just knocks into reverse. There is not gate/collar to lift
