Seat Battery Access 2007 Transit

Postby simoncelox » Thu Feb 12, 2009 5:11 pm

RE the above can anyone tell me without requiring the dexterity of Houdini how to remove the metal bracket that retains the battery. The Ford handbook supplied bears no resembles to the actual set-up. There are 3 fixing points. One with an accessible bolt we have removed. The other two are each different and appear to require access to a bolt head from inside the seat frame the trouble is the battery is in situ and this makes it difficult. There also an internal lip that prevents access by a spanner - its all quite bizarre!

You need to remove the seat first by undoing 4 Torx bolts (they are T40 size). Then you need a 10mm socket or similar on a longish extension to undo the bolt that is facing the handbrake.

The above is based on my vehicle which is a 2007 350-140 rwd and has two batteries under the driver's seat.

I have done this a few times and found it was much easier to remove the seat. You can do it with the seat slid fully forward but are likely to short the battery this way when lifting the bracket out.

Only takes 10 minutes to remove the seat so why stress yourself.

Top advice here to remove the seat. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get the batteries out with no success before finding this thread.

It's a little fiddly getting the cover for the seat belt off as you need a fine blade to prise out the retaining clips for the seat adjusters but that is about it.

Oh yes don't forget to reattach the seat belt before putting this cover back on...

I just removed the four 13mm nuts, holding the seat to the frame, and tipped the seat over onto the passenger seat. I never touched the seat belt :)

I have replaced the Battery twice now on my 2008 2.2 ,Never had to remove my seat to undo the bolts that hold the bracket on. Where I did have problems was the removing of that plastic cover, Fixed that problem about 5 years ago ,Having finally removing it I then cut in in half, Now removal/refit is very easy lol. When I came to fit this latest Big Bosch Battery I had to cut and modify that metal bracket that goes across the top of the battery. So there you have it I like to make life easy.
Ford Transit 280 SWB,,Year 2008,,2.2,, If it can,t be fixed/repaired/ with a 4 pound lump hammer then it must be an electrical problem.

To do this properly and without removing the seat, you will need to:
1. Slide the seat back and remove the two torx t40 bolts at the front. You will need a t40 bit plus an adapter to fit a square drive socket set rachet. Don't bother trying with a screwdriver torx.
2. Remove the horizontal cover under the seat
3. Slide the seat forward and wind the seat back forward.
4. Using a socket set (recommend a 1/4" drive) use an 8mm socket to remove the bolt on the side of the bracket holding the batteries facing the door. Using the 8mm socket on a long extension, do the same on the other side of the bracket from inside the battery box. For the nut at the tear, use a 10mm socket on an extension piece, taking care not to drop the nut. The bracket is then free.
5. Do not try to wriggle out the bracket without disconnecting the negative battery terminal on the rear battery. My strong advice is to place some plastic or tape over the positive terminal before removing the bracket, otherwise there is a very high risk that the bracket will flash over the terminals.
6. I do not know whether the code for the radio is lost on disconnecting the front battery. I set up a power unit to feed 112v through a resistor connected to the cigarette lighter.
7. Finally, disconnect the positive lead of the back battery and lift it out. If the objective is to replace the front battery, that will need to slid towards the rear, the negative and positive connections disconnected and then removed.

Thanks for the nice "How to"....however....the original thread was started over 12 1/2 years ago and the OP hasn't been back here since.
