Turbo pump help please

Postby Jim H » Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:15 pm

Could anyone take on the job of modifying the injection pump on my 85ps DI turbo engined truck as pictured to the left? The engine has not done 10k from new but it has a manual pump that has been turned up, not an electric epic pump. When i say modify i meen fitting the extra fuel gizmo to work with the turbo and genaraly set it to run the 85ps injectors properly. Please PM me ta, Jim

Hi Jim,

I converted 100PS DI with manual Bosch pump. no smoke and plenty of poke, runs better than the original epic :wink:
Whats up with your conversion ?

It's ok and i'm using it but ok is not right. Just turning the fuel delivery up isn't what the engine is asking for. It has been done befor. The first turbo DI's where manual pump. If anything it pulls like *uck on low revs but runs out of steam when it should be working hard. Also (don't laugh cos it's as airo dynamic as a brick) it's pritty bad on fuel. I've read all the advice on adusting this and setting that but it's guessing and the professional job is what it needs to work for a living.The epic wirering and brian where not suppied with the engine and by all accounts i would prefer the maual set up. :) Also it's mainly beeing used at 3.25 to 3.5 ton so i could do with all the power it's got

So;

Are you using the 145/6 pump :?: (I guess not, from what you've said)

Have you fitted 100PS injectors :?: (as you obviously need all the power you can safely get with minimum smoke)

And the pump timing can only ever be guess work, as this turbo engine was designed to be used only with the Lucas EPIC :!: :)

So a few hours will need to be spent driving and adjusting fuel and timing to get it to work as efficiently as possible, but the results and reliability will nothing short of excellent :!: :D

Hi Andy,
If I recall I sent you the epic pump I took off this engine.
The pump I fitted was a bosch 76ps one but not a 145/6. The injectors are the 86ps ones that came with the motor. Do you think it wold be better with 100ps ones?
The timing is set with the pins as you would a normal Di. The overall fuel delivery screw has been turned up 2 full turns.
Would there be any chance you would be willing set set it up for me?

Here's hoping, many thanks, Jim.

Ok :D
Now this pump won't be as good as the 145/6 pump, but will have to do for now, as well as the 85PS injectors :!:

BUT :!:
You now need to artificially advance the pump timing on your set up, before anything else and then see how it zooms up the hills :!: :?:
How :?: ;
As you've set up the "correct static timing" you now have a very simple job of slackening off the bolts on the pump pulley, rotate the pump bolts fully clockwise so that all the slot is to the left (of the bolt at the top of the pulley) :!:
Tighten them back up to spec.
All done :!: :D

There is absolutely no need to use the pins or anything else :!: If the cover is off, it won't take five minutes to do :wink:

Thanks Andy, I will do as you say and let you know :D
What's the reason for this & do you think the fuel adjustment sounds about right?

Cheers, Jim

It's simply the way the set up is, when you change from Lucas EPIC to Bosch pump on a turbo diesel Di and may have something to do with the fact that the cam is also different on the two engines :?:

Fuel adjustment does sound about right :!: :D
Have you adjusted the "mid range" fuelling too :?:

Guy would be one of the best people to ask, as he's actually done this :!: :D

As far as I know you adjust your 145/6 pump until it smokes under load and back it off until you have the best balance between least smoke and most power :!: (after the timing has been set :!:)

You need the bigger 686 pump, either the 141, 145/146. I have only used the 145 :wink:
The screw on the top incrementally releases the torque control giving it juice on full torque, instead of whacking fuel in whether it's needed or not with the screw on the back.
