Steering for Transit 1987

Postby 212HL » Sat Jun 13, 2009 11:21 pm

Hi, I am new here and got a problem.
Since here in Switzerland you can't find absolutely no parts for a 1987 Transit, I want to take a chance on here.
I need a bendix powersteering. Mine is f****** while the rest is fine.
Do you guys know, where I can find one? Would be a pitty to trow away just for the steering..

Right. It's left.
It was always pretty much soft, how should I say, loose in a way.
But now I can't pas the control because its too loose. I think it's just worn out.
No spare parts to rebuild it, no used parts on the junk.
It's a 190 by the way.
Are the steerings different for L or R?

It seems like this part has done 350 000 Km and has past the point of any adjustment..
Still, I gonna tell this to the guy, that is fixing it. Let's see what he says.
I got rear axle fixed, a fresh Sierra engine fited, rust done, brakes new..you know what I mean?
It is just to this single peace of gear..
Since you guys seem to have everything round, I was hoping to get one here, but eather me or you
are driving on the wrong side, so my dreams will end in the shredder..

The power steering boxes are really rare here, even in RHD format :(

It is possible to fit the independant front suspension (coil springs) from a later van and power steering racks are easily obtainable. But I dont know how much work is involved. (This is what the SWBs of that year would have)

Thanks guys for reading this and giving me advice.
BTW sorry if I screw up with my English. I live in Switzerland..
Maybe the steering box can be adjusted. Like my mechanic said, the things inside are worn out.
To change the front end with other partswould mean a horrible bill, cause time ist very expensive round here,
mechanics have to rip you of because they get ripped of. So many cars go to the thrash, because the costs of getting them done would exceede theyr worth..

Its not cheap here either :(

Main dealers are charging up to £150 per hour just for labour!

Independants are up to about £80 per hour too!

I'ts just, when I first read here, it seemed to be cheaper to get a Transit an keep it runing.
So I thaught, maybe the work is not as expensive as here round..

That may be because a lot of us do our own work? (I only take my vehicle to the garage for its mandatory annual safety check (the MOT))

So does anyone know anyone that knows anyone that has a steering box for my 87?
It is not a van, btw but, I don't know how you call 'em, like a truck with a lift at the back..
And left hand drive.

just thought

i've sort of got one :!: it's a mk1 LHD box off my fire van - problem is i havent converted it to RHD yet :( it will fit but being a mk1 the column is in 1 piece all the way up and the indicators are different :)

if you would consider a mk1 box you could try some of the others who have allready converted their vans to RHD - madmark, transitgeoff can't think who else :?
