That poxy little solenoid is now over £235 + vat and only available from Fords

To change the oil and filter can be a messy task, as there's no drain plug

Best buy one of those large plastic containers, big enough to cover the area of the sump, as the whole sump with it's oil is removed all at once  (yes, can be very messy)

As you can't change all the oil in automatic transmissions, you'll only need about a gallon

My goodness that is expensive.

I will try cleaning the solinoid. Can I use anything apart from Carb Cleaner? I have diesel and petrol, wd 40, meths etc. Would any of these be a good enough substitute? If not, is there a particular brand of carb cleaner you would recommend? I presume I could pick some up from Halfords?

Thank you for the advice.

Also, what is the best way to refill the gearbox with oil. You mentioned earlier that I will lose some into the container.

Is there a level bung somewhere to fill it on the gear box? And where can I access it?

Please excuse my inexperience.

Sure :!:
I only suggested carb cleaner, as it's good at removing gum and varnish deposits :D

WD40 might even do

I've only just noticed your welcome post and wondering if your van is a MK4 or 5 :?: As some campers take a while to be converted, it could be a MK4 :?:

Can you confirm, as there are differences to the transmission :!:

Oh,

I forgot to ask how you checked the oil level :?:

Hot and running and after selecting all positions on the selector 3 times, pausing for a second in each, ending in "P" :!:

Looking at the grill on the front, I believe it is a mark 4. Its shows on the MOT cert as being 1994 first year of registration. It also looks the same grill as on wikipedia :

I followed the guide in the manual.

Get engine to operating temperature. Apply the handbrake, press the footbrake, run through the shifter 3 times, and then let engine idle for a min.

I didn't however pause for a second after each. I did not see this in manual. Do you mean pause for a second after each movement of lever? Or after each complete selection of all gears?

Not sure he has as he's asking where the gearbox is.

If it's a MK4, I doubt you have a pressure solenoid and the engine may be a converted 80PS to a turbo :?:

Any chance of a picture under the bonnet :?:

Sorry, I did mean at every movement of the lever, as in each position, to allow the clutches etc. to accumulate as much oil out of the sump

Oil is replenished via the dipstick tube :!:
A funnel with a narrow opening should suffice and take your time, as it can back up

Exactly what I said earlier :!:    ( a converted 80PS MK4 to turbo)

Right, forget the pressure solenoid :!: You don't have one :!:

Check all your vacuum pipes going to and leaving the pierburg valve which is ahead of the fuel injection pump :!: :D

You still need to check your oil level as stated :!:
