best to give us enough info to have a go with a chance of being right ,

mark , engine size ,fuel year
too much info is better than none

myself i cant say as i dont have a tranny but i think the bit you want may be under the windscreen valance in the engine bay as they need cooling to dissipate heat

Its not your relays.
Its definitely the resistor pack if it will only work in top speed.
I cant help with its location, but they are usually close to the heater blower motor, try and get a ford TIS disc or workshop manual.
Failing that if you can see the wires at the fan try and follow them and you will eventually find the resistor pack.

This is the thread I was linked to when I did mine - I found it great. Depends on your actual vehicle, as Mk5 is when they had two locations. My Mk4, and the early Mk5's are behind the drivers side headlight. Don't get confused with the dimdip resistor which looks almost identical, but has less wires to it.
Some people say I am stupid... I never realised I was that clever.

EDIT: Just make sure its the 3 pin one
On the MK3, 4 and earlier MK5 have the 3 pin heater resister on the behind the headlight, the later (someone else will know year) are under the dash

All the Mk4s and early Mk5s I have done have had them by the offside headlight, that's why you move them up to near the battery tray because it is right by it.

yes on early ones is under bonnet, late ones are next to blower motor (under dash) as pic shows.
