SERVO PUMP FAILURE CAUSES

Postby mark338 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 9:35 pm

transit 97 2.5 d non turbo rear wheel drive, servo pump seized on back of alternator, replaced with new unit worked perfect lasted 10 minuts, old unit had oil in no leaks could old oil be causing it, not changed for 3 years, poor but only does about 2000 miles a year, new unit got hot straight away as if not cooling, could it be the oil pump, oil light not on runs ok, does it just need an oil change or is there a common reason for these units to fail, help is apreciated, need to cure the cause, this must have happened to some one. thanks mark

Oil feed or return line probably blocked due to the poor maintenance as you've described.

stripped the old pump and discovered the plastic fins inside had worn to such an extent that one had disappeared and melted in to pieces, it was these pieces that clogged up the oil return pipe, cleaned that out replaced the unit changed the oil but it still seems to be running very hot, is this normal, you cant put your hand on it after about a minute and hold it there even from a cold engine, ive blown the oil ways out with the compressor, need to know if running hot is normal, really excellent flow from feed pipe, and blows right through the engine from the return pipe, cheers, mark

the oil return pipe was block due to the plastic fins inside the pump wearing away and turning to mush, it blocked at thr bend at the bottom so if anyone replaces one of these pumps be aware to take the oil return pipe off and blow it through or there will be no point fitting a new pump,
