Lucas cav problem?

Postby HOOD117 » Wed Sep 08, 2010 10:47 am

Hi all. I have an 87' 2.5 di with manual pump. When I changed cam belt, the pin slot on pump pulley was a quarter turn out and wouldn`t start if pinned up. So off came pump to be taken to sms in Bucks. Turned out to have wrong centre pulley, wich they replaced for me, and set timing. Now times up and runs ok, but seems a little down on power from what it was.
I had seen on another thread about eeking a little more power by adjusting under blue plastic cover. So i removed cover to find a three piece doohicky. All three were loose? I`m sure this can`t be right. The large outer nut was about 2mm out of body of pump and screwed easily in by hand. I have now nipped this up tight but have no idea if any of the adjustment is correct. Is there any way of knowing or setting by screwing to stop and then so many turns out? Any help would be great, cheers.

ps: thanks Luke for seat info.
If it aint broke, fix it anyway!

:? I don't think so :!:
The thread you might be referring to is for the Bosch pump and doesn't say any thing about a blue cap :?:

Not sure if the link will work, as I'm using the PS3. Laptop is slower than my van!

The link works :D
But as said in the link, the Lucas CAV pump usually smokes if you try and turn it up :!:
They are also known to give good performance and fuel economy as they are :!:

My van already smokes quite bad, even on med throttle. If I can`t get more torque/power, can I reduce the black smoking without loosing any, by adjusting the fuelling?
Does anyone know which bit I need to adjust? There are two square shaped collars with an allen head screw in the centre of the smaller collar.
Before anyone asks, done tappets, timing belt and all filters, so left with pump or injector issue.
Cheers

Update.
After speaking to a specialist deisel wizard at sms, I adjusted the centre collar (screwed out a couple of turns) smoke is now minimal with no noticable loss of power! Result. :D

Cheers for that. Easier than I thought.
Shown with blue plastic cover removed.
Arrowed is the centre collar that I adjusted. In for more fuel, out for less.

I got this far and the part in the picture with the arrow to it wouldnt' budge at all. The smaller one on the end with the hex in it did though and I turned it clockwise but not sure if extra torque or placebo, but definitely no smoke.
