Postby garycooper » Tue Oct 05, 2010 3:42 pm

Hi this might be the must silly question in the world. BUT

I have just got my self a 51 plate 2.4 duratorq transit.

Can i use a mix of off the shelf veg oil and deisel mix with out any mods?

Reason i ask is i have access to cheap veg oil.

and looking to save money on fuel cost.

thanks for any info regarding this matter

just be a bit aware of what you put up here
i dont know if you are aware but using veg oil with out paying tax to the government is tax evasion
(quite serous)

There's lots of info about it on here but all I can say is vegetable oil is for frying chips not running engines.

I dont recall reading too much about mk6's but it should be ok in a mk5.

there is a lot of information on the internet about this  http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&source=h ... c0029df58a

There is an awful lot to talk about on the issue personally I wouldn't use it in a mk6 unless you have had it treated.

that sums it up really as if you want to run it in a car/van you need to get the solvents out of it and other chemicals and at the very least use it heated so it is the correct grade. Though I can tell you from experience it will work in a mk5 very well

The mk6 needs to be modified to run any veg oil at any percentage. As it being a direct injection engine the fuel is ignited over the top of the piston crown. Being a thicker viscosity the fuel doesnt get fuly combusted untill the engine is warm so the sooty residue makes like a carbon build up that sticks the rings to the piston. 'ring gumming'. You will need to run a twin tank conversion to run veg oil in a mk6.

a mk 3-5 2.5di is also a direct injection and need no changes to run on veggy oil apart from the need for a bosch pump and thats for pump life not engine life

I used to run my MK6 on veg all the time, for 2 years.. In the summer on long runs I had nearly 100% veg in it.. Winter is a bit harder so used to have a 50% mix. Rapeseed was the best.

I was stopped by the ministry once and they said it was fine so long as I didnt use more than 2,500l and kept records.

My thought exactly, if they were meant to run on chip fat it would say so in the instruction book.
