Lucas Epic Injector Pump

Postby Genesis » Wed Aug 30, 2006 11:30 am

After receiving my pump back from the diesel specialists in 162 bits, having declined their offer of rebuilding it at a cost of N.Z. $4300, I have now managed to reassemble it,fit it to the engine, connect up all the bits that my garage had to undo to remove it and actually got it running!!. A feat that I would have thought impossible and one that my mechanically minded friends said could not be done by someone with no experience such as myself. So I've overidden my normally modest nature and given myself a small pat on the back. HOWEVER.......
The engine is not running correctly. I think it has put itself into "limp home mode" as it will only run at around 2000 rpm and the accellerator has little or no effect. I've tried five different timing settings but none make any improvement. On some settings all I get is clouds of blue smoke from the exaust and no ignition at all.
Any help I can get to remedy this situation would be most welcome as for the last six months I've been grounded and for a retired 64 year old Kiwi with thousands of places to go and things to do an immobile Transit campervan makes life frustrating and boring.

Cheers Pat

If there was a problem with the pump in the first place has this been fixed?

Hi MrMPuk, The original problem was a leak from one of the four injector feed assemblies at the rear end of the pump.Other than this it was working O.K.When I reassembled it I bought a kit and replaced all the rubber seals. Dont know why the specialists couldnt have done this. Could be their policy not to reassemble a pump unless it is 100% functional.
Anyway, the leak has gone. Been replaced by new problems as described.
Cheers Pat

Well if it worked okay before other than the leak on the pump then I would say your fault is the pump. The reason they charge so much is the fact that it isn't just a case of bolting the thing back together, if it was we would all be doing it i'm affraid.

Lucas Epic Injector Pump

Postby Genesis » Thu Aug 31, 2006 10:40 pm

Thanks, all your comments are appreciated.
The engine light is on as well, but if I get a diagnostic done its most likely going to simply tell me theres something wrong on the pump side of things,a fact of which I am already acutely aware . Perhaps I'll try a few more timing settings.
The good side is my pushbike is in excellent working order, uses no fuel(@ $1.24 litre for diesel!!) and I'm getting plenty of exercise.
Cheers.....Pat

I think you are missing the point, playing with the timing isn't going to fix a faulty pump. The fault the the engine management has picked up on may be due to a sensor or anything which is why I said get the codes read.

epics suffer from an actuator inside the pump failing try that  but f**k knows if they'll sell you that part seperate

I'm afraid the biggest problem you have is your engine started.

Lucas Epic Injector Pump

Postby Genesis » Wed Sep 27, 2006 5:36 am

Does anyone know how these pumps work?.
Which solenoid/actuator regulates the amount of fuel thats pumped to the injectors?. Is it the one on the rear end circled by the delivery outlets?.
Can I override the ECU so the accellerator works manually i.e. with a cable perhaps?.
What are all the other solenoids and sensors for i.e. the double one on top and another similar one below it on the rear side.
The one on the left side(looking from the front of vehicle).
The one thats on the right side and connected to the flywheel sensor.
How do I know if the pump is delivering enough P.S.I. and could this be why the engine is hard to start and when it does start it has to run for 10 minutes berfore:a.The accellerator has any effect(albeit small) on engine revs. b.The ECU light goes out.
In the good old days it was just your foot pedal connected to the carb via a mechanical lever. Simple ay!. But then, so was rock 'n' roll music.

My Transit is 1996.Turbo,Auto gearbox.
All constructive comments appreciated...........Pat.

Your best bet would be to fit a manual Bosch pump and accelerator pedal assy (cable) as found on LWB minbuses built between 1998 and 2000
Turn up the fuelling and DUMP all the electronics :!:

 $4300  I would also have collected the pump :!:
Were they going to gold plate it inside and out :!: Rip off merchants :!:

Yeah thanks Andyg. Theres possibly going to be a Bosch pump available here.Just waiting for the owner of a "broken cambelt, engine damaged" Transit to decide what he wants to do with it. If the price is right Ill grab it and fit the Bosch pump to mine.
Meantime I,d still be interested,no..fascinated! to find out how the Lucas Epic works if anyone can shed some light.......................Pat
