Which engine oil to use ?

Postby sonsalis » Sun Jun 05, 2011 6:15 pm

I bought my Transit 100 long W/B 1999 2.5 diesel campervan last August. It has only done 43K miles and the service book shows a stamp for servicing just prior to purchase. However the oil is very black having done only 800 miles since the service . Is this usual for a diesel ?
I am wondering whether to change the oil and filter using fully synthetic oil which I am told lasts very much longer - will this last a few years if I only do say 3K per year ? What oil do you recommend and is it a simple enough job for a novice like myself to do ? I don't have a handbook but someone says SAE 10W/30 should be used ? Anyone know what filter I have to ask for ?
Is gearbox/back axle oil easy to change ?
Finally with a low expected mileage would I get away with a garage service every two years ?
Thanks

Servicing is yearly regardless of mileage.

A search would reveal all.

Ford recommend a 5/30 synthetic - though it would appear to be a semi. Filter will be 2.5DI ford diesel.

Oil in diesel will turn black very quickly, 'specially if the engine hasn't been flushed occasionally.

You should have it serviced at least once a year despite low miles as the oil will oxidize when left standing and exposed to air. The sad fact is, the less miles it does the more often it'll want servicing - plus cambelts don't really like being left in 1 place for long periods, though they ain't as bad for this as they used to be.
