Mk1 TDI progress

Postby Andrewb » Sat Sep 13, 2008 6:44 pm

Thought I'd post a picture of the plate I've had made to mate my 2001 VW 1.9 TDI to a type 9 'box.

Here it is all assembled using the FWD vw caddy gearbox casing front half.

The clutch was a custom remanufactured one from National Clutchs, if you explain what your doing they can make up the disc quite easily. Also had to have the ford clutch release bearing shaft turned down the the same diameter as the vw one so that I could use the clutch arm easily. The standard type 9 spigot bearing o/d 21mm is the correct size to to tap gently into the vw flywheel ( putting the bearing in the freezer first helps) which is handy! The only other thing to do was to chop off the diff casing from the vw gearbox.
The next problem is the clutch slave cylinder as the type 9 is in the way, looks like I may get away just angling it but I'll see. Master cylinder already in place...

window for wardy, may be keeping it for a while though

Thats all for now, will keep updating! :D

may be a stupid question: the engine block of vw tdi 1,9 and petrol audi 1,8 are the same, as the 2,4 diesel 6 cylinder, which is only longer, but the bolts are the same. the gearbox from the VW LT van should fit the 1,9 tdi engine. possibly a easier swap?

Hi, I did consider that g/b but chose the type 9 because it means no changes to the propshaft and something I think is quite important which is that the ford speedo cable plugs straight in. Also loads of people sell the seals etc and its lighter. :)

Good work! Not convinced about the type9 in a transit though. Had one go bang without warning in the middle of germany.

great idea, tdi engine. Type 9 wil break, i allready stripped all teeth of theird gear with a suposedly stronger OD gearbox. Conversion plate looks ok, but its just the beginning. Clutch and chipkey are the real chalenge. Greets from holland
dont buy it, build it

Thanks, the engine fits in perfectly, with no mods to the propshaft and just 2cm between the front pulley and front crossmember. I'm in sussex if you'd like a look when its done, looks like your planning someting similar with your new van.
Gilly, I have the gear lever coming up from right at the back of the box, the position is ok, maybe one day a linkage could be made to improve things. I have on of these on my kitcar type 9 http://www.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/shop/product.asp?numRecordPosition=28&P_ID=249&strPageHistory=&strKeywords=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=77 but that moves it backwards.
Havnt heard of the transit top for a type 9 though?

I'm in search of a diff atm ideally ~3.5. I'm a bit unsure what type the transit has though. I thought it was an atlas, but looking here http://www.vkukko.fi/ford/atlas.htm it doesn't look anything like one. Mine is a square axle with the diff unit front loading, is it an english diff maybe?

the transit type 9 has the stick out the plate on the top rather than at the back, were fitted in MK2 and early MK3 transits
