after weeks of ownership it occured to me the engine was stupidly quiet for OHV and had an absolutely awful tickover at least 1 or 2 cylinders not firing at least
so I bought myself some nice new feeler gauges and a haynes manual off of ebay and set about re-setting the clearances of the valves..
first problem was working out the numbering of the valves, only after flicking back and forth through the manual till it fel to bits almost did I realise it said in
BOLD under the diagram
FRONT OF ENGINE
so ran them through nipped the covers back on put the plugs back in (looked very lean compared to last strip so might have to richen the carb up a bit)
and started her up..
took a little bit of winding to get her to go but when she went she settled into the smoothest tickover I had ever seen, I could almost have sat a glass of water on top of the engine I think without it spilling...
have got a tick from one of the back ones but I think thats my fault from misjudging when the other two were open (as it says in the manual) but the main thing is she is ticking over smoothly on all four now
inside the engine looked very clean with no signs of the black goop you often see in older cars so reckon the mileage may be correct
if anyone has an easy way of tappeting then please let me know !!
