Whip the cam belt off and see if there is any lift in the front of the cam.

well i still dont know about the new engine....though i suspect you are right rover.......but the old one.....all it was was a loose follower had jumped off the worn ball post and was rattling about inside the cam cover. i was sure it was terminal, if only i'd checked

next to sod all wear on the bores too....oh well....the clutch needed doing anyway, and ive now got a spare engine to build into a 2.1 monster
