Thanks for your comments gents...I was hoping that what I posted would be useful for others. I will keep the thread as interesting as possible...have a few things on my mind at the mo...not sure what route to take with the van..
Weather has had an effect on van start up..being really cold...thankfully with a new battery on board I got it started....lots of smoke though until I got driving then it eased off...its probably me pumping the gas peddle as I turn her over...I was a bit embarrassed this morning when moving the van outside mine....plumes of smoke and plenty of people looking at me... I've turned the midrange fueling "top screw" back half a turn see if that helps. A question of trial and error and getting the technique right during cold start ups...
My birthday tommorrow...one result so far..not working when Transit 5 mania is on..now there's a thought for a birthday pressie

Hello again
My post seems to be doing well on the hits..I hope it's continuing to be a help for those who dare tread the self service and tinkering route.. |(It's all about me..la lal la la   ) I bought these for my birthdayhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221172974111 so the nippers can be safe..Frag has sorted a seat belt anchor for me..all to do know is fix it down and away we go....I plan to take it out when MOT is due so not to complicate matters..same with the modded EGR inlet manifold connection (the piece I stuck a piece of steel on and bolts through all orifices)..I have invested in a second hand one so I can rig all back together as was..just incase!
Havn't done much to the motor...siliconed all screws coming through the engine bay and a couple of mr meaners aroung the side windows allowing water through...now I have to wait for the next down pour of wet stuff (won't be long for that I guess  ) and I can see if further leaks are present.

I am waiting really for the nicer weather to show its face before doing painting and panel work (externally). At the moment I am enjoying having a van and driving her to the tip fully loaded with houshold stuff..wicked. Start up is still good, turns over nice and quick and fires into life..very cold mornings I spray a little break cleaner in the air intake just to ease the pressure and stress. STILL have a plume of smoke when I do start her with/without additive...kind of embarassing..reminds me of an old barge on the canal ways firing up to life..after a 100yrds or so she clears up and no smoke at all..sweet...so long as I take her for a spin before the MOT...I should be fine
I have turned the pump back up a notch (mid range fueling top of pump)...very noticable when accelerating from first to second..now back to just under 2 full complete turns (clockwise)....
Back to work tomorrow..hopefully on my next days off I'm planning/going to prep/rub down/grind away on the inside of the van before fitting the rear seats...
Catch you all later
Tom

Hello again....

Been busy today...I bought these from ebay including postage £110. They are from a mk7 minibus. Frag, a fellow member sorted me with a seatbelt anchor for the left seat..nice one mate
Here is a picture of the seat and the approximate place I wanted to fix them...
Image
The next pictures are not the best..the problem I had was offering up the fixing points that the seat has on a mrk 5 floor panel. No matter what I did position wise, the peaks and troughs did not want to play
Image
a bit clearer...but you get the idea what I was up against...
Image
Image
The solution I came up with to offer a level surface and at the same time give the seat a good solid base to fasten too..was 3 plates of 6mm steel. I know there are 4 pieces in the photo...one extra just incase I needed it.
Image
Bolts..high strength..M12x20..for the plates and m12x60 for fixing the seat..washers and Nylock nuts to fasten underneath..proper job in mind. Also in the picture is m12 tapping kit and wrench. I used these to tap m12 holes in the plate and van bottom
Image
I placed the plates down and sat the seat on dry and marked around everything..I used a level to plumb a line/ditance of 240mm from the drivers seat..

Internet is being a right pain..Sky broadband..your doing my head right in and spoiling my posting
I have to write this in Microsoft word first as I keep losing the work I’ve just done..grrr..
Here is another view…
Image
I marked everything up and got to work on the first plate
Image
Tools and my best friend my workmate.
Image
First plate being sorted..cup of tea and tufcut..not together might I add..
Image
A closer look at the m12 tapping bit and my first bolt…yes boy.. :P
Image
First plate fitted..x5 bolts used as you can see..
Image
All bolts backed up with a washer and nyloc nut underneath..proper job
Image
Second plate fitted again x5 bolts used.. I’m flying now, becoming an expert..whoop..
Image
Third and final plate..I went for x4 bolts as I felt this would be adequate
Image
I then got the seat and placed it on ..re measures the 240mm and used a punch to mark the seat holes..I wasn’t able to get the drill in there!...I drilled them and again tapped out m12 bolt holes.
Image
And finally I fitted the seat..I have to say I’m rather chuffed..solid and I feel really confident My nippers will be safe sitting/travelling in these..
Image
A look at the bolts from a different angle..
Image
And from the back..you will notice x2 bolts have several washers (x4 extra)..I had to use m12x60 here because of the trough in the floor panel. When I initialy bolted underneath I couldn’t get them tight enough and ended up tightening up to the bolt shoulder. Adding the washers up top help me get the thread I needed. M12x20 were not long enough and I didn’t want to deform the steel plate if I did decide to use them.
Image
All thats left to do is get some washers and nyloc the seat bolts up...job done and well chuffed..my nippers had a test sit sit and wanted to know when we were off to the beach!!...I feel confident the job I've done will be sound for my nippers travelling around. I sat in them and fastened the belts and rock to a fro quite sharply...hope the neighbours weren't watching..did look a little bit like I was into licking windows and stuff
Thanks for looking and as ever your support, feedback is always appreciated. Once again...thanks Frag for sorting me out with the seat belt anchor..spot on.
Catch you all soon
Tom

I have been pottering around.....I've owned the van for approx 25days and with all its faults I have fallen in love... Wife doesn't need to know.
Call me old fashioned (45 in Jan) I am a great believer in preserving and making the most of what you've got....

I feel same mate  You're doing some amazingly tough work & all the time you're taking to share it with us too :o You deserve a medal.

What do they mean by 'turboing your engine?'. Only interested cos when I bought mine the guy said it was a turbo. I later found out it isn't, its just had something put on to speed it up a bit, so maybe it's been turboed? I get tangoed, my van gets turboed

That green filler you've used, will it fill holes in the rear quarter floor?

Thanks..I enjoy sharing..I find members are willing to give you that little extra help/advice as an when needed..give and take an all that :)

I was talking about slapping a turbo set up on my engine during the earlier posts...I will/might do in the future..difficult to say because of the diff and gearbox the van currently has...If I was to go this route I would transplant turbo pieces from a turbo engine..including head and related gearbox and a better diff ratio. If I use current gearbox and diff I wouldn't get a great deal of gain from the work involved. I am better off looking out for a turbo van for sale and do that one up....In the meantime I have turned the fuel pump just under two turns and you can tell the difference. Having no EGR connection etc also helps as does a super clean manifold air intake and jolly good service.

That green filler you've used, will it fill holes in the rear quarter floor?[/quote]
Its good stuff and sets really hard..Where I have used it is only a temp measure until the finer weather comes and then I get the welder out. I highly recommend the stuff I've used..value for money.

Turbo and non turbo gearboxes are the same...

There are 2 different "ratio sets" dependant on whether it has a wide ratio (normally 150, 190, 230s) or a close ratio (80,100,120). Forth and Fifth gear are the same ratio in all transit MT75 gearboxes.

And most turbos have the "normal" diff too (4.56 for a 5 stud)
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)
09 140PS T330S 2.2

Gaffa tape is like the force, it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together

Differential Ratio J - 5.14...as you know suitable for pulling/carrying heavy loads.... only planning this van to be a day van. However, would like to hit the motorway and do some miles at comfy speeds (engine etc not being over stressed).....I am trying to determine a the best combination. 6 stud wheel diff/axle..not sure..still learning mate..
