Mk1 transit project

Postby alinomie » Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:28 pm

I've done it again and bought an old fordie, 40 year old Ford Transit Camper van

Its no looker yet, and body work needs a good tidy up, its generally solid, rear floor is well hard!!!

Back of the van, with homemade camper conversion

After half an hour with a hammer inside was removed, floor lifted and OMG!!!!
Image

A concrete floor!! thankfully the bodywork and cementing skills of the guy how built it weren't as good as his woodworking
Image
Image
Image

Its a weak batch so is scraping of easily

Grandson and great great great grandad

Plans are to remove the 2.0 pinto 4 speed box, fit a 2.5 Di and 5speed Mt75 box, (if i can find a Di Turbo would fit that) looking for the front axle and stubs from a mk2 transit to get some brake discs up front, might send wheels away to get them banded 2/3inches wider. Side windows are going to be removed and converted back to a van, with a simple 1970's retro paint job. Oh and a towbar

All the concrete removed from the rear floor, ready for a clean up paint and 2 small plates
Image

2.0 pinto removed and engine bay cleaned up
Image

Image
Image

2.5di dummy fitted going to be removed again to paint engine bay
Image

Bulkhead and floor modification
Image

Left front outrigger and step was bit rotten so out it came
Image

step and outrigger replaced just outer sill and floor to finish
Image

bit rusty round the screen
Image

side windows removed and new metal welded in place

A wee progress report on the mk1 Transit
Image
Image
Image
Windscreen scuttle and A-post was a bit rusty so was cut out and repaired

Image
Just a small bit fillerwork on this side

Image
Image
Scuttle repaired and engine bay stripped and painted

Image
Image
Removed the rear head cloth and insulation and found this. MORE cement!!!! insulation was stuck to roof with it!

Image
Image
tops of rear door pillars needed more welding

Image
Roof needed a repair at the gutter edge

Image
Image
Inside of van blasted clean, POR15 primered and white primered

Image
Left side ready for primer, one side down one to go

Image
Recaro seats i'm planning on fitting to van, clean one was powerwashed after been soaked with alloy wheel cleaner

Image
Right side didn't have as much filler, it had MORE!! i really don't do myself favours! Depressing

Image
Image
Image
All ready for spray booth- FINALLY!

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Masked, primered and finish inside doors and on roof.

Image
Heres how it now stands, going to sort out all mechanics now, get doors and interior together, lower it and sort out wheels before the finish goes on outside

Wow!

Top work that. You were lucky it wasn't a real pop top, we whipped the roof off ours and put a Mk2 roof on. You're double lucky, when they cut the windows, they didn't take out the body louvre. Looking good there!

Lovely :)
What colour are you going to finish it in?
If I knew then what I know now, I'd have taken it to the scrapyard...

Glad I didn't though :)
