1977 Ford Transit Mk 1 Camper Van

Postby wardy-uk » Mon Feb 05, 2007 11:49 pm

Hi Everybody

This is my first progress report. Well so far I fetched it from Birmingham and left it at a local garage that handle all my repairs for Mk 1 transit Ice Cream van. The engine on it is seized so I have removed it and gotton another V4 engine out of a donar Mk 1 transit for £70 along with some dash board trim. A bargin or what! The new engine is a little stiff but im sure it will go no bother. I plan to drop the engine of at the garage tomorrow for them to put in. Carnt wait to here her run! Will update as more happens and will try and get some photos on here of her.

William :D

Yep it really nice to here that engine choke back into life. Mine however will never choke back into life as that prat who was bringing it here did not tie it down to his wagon very well and its fell off!!!!!!!!! Im now on the look out for another V4 so please let me know if you have one. Will a engine out of Sierra fit?

Thats bad news mate :o

A sierra engine will not be a direct replacement as its a Pinto engine, although I doubt a conversion from V4 to Pinto would be too difficult :D

:? you would need a bellhouseing from a pinto and also engine mounts,
the rad is a big ishue ,the pinto will fit in but getting a rad in is another story ,so you will have to go diesel front!
when you say fell off his wagon what damage did it do???? dont forget you bits off your old engine etc

Hi

Cheers for the coments, I don't think I will go with the sierra pinto engine if I have to change the front. I found a ford V4 1500 engine up for sale, is that just the same as my V4 that will be in the van now? Sorry I don't know much about engines! I never actually sore the engine when it fell off but I was told it was leaking oil from top to bottom due to a nice big crack! He was doing 60 down a motor way when it decided to jump! :(

A 1500 V4 wouldnt pull you out of bed, the 1700 is underpowered and the 2000 is just about acceptable IMO.

As far as I know the 1500 wan only available in an early corsair. I would be tempted to get the original engine out and strip it down, i'm sure the parts must be available from one of the classic clubs.

rover that would of been a streight 4 then :?: essex v4 i think was only 1.7. and 2.0 so he should have a 1.7 maybe,as you say a strip down might be the way to go! :?

Hi Everybody

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

The above link was the engine I was going to get but I think your all right it wont have the power. The engine is seized throught sitting and i belive it as a little bit of water in it. I was told by the garage it would cost a lot to fix it. I know they have taken the plugs out and poured some oil but it still will not turn. Would this be a big job to do it myself?

Cheers William
