Rover V8 to Transit MT75 Gearbox Adapter

Postby dieselhead123 » Thu Oct 17, 2013 6:54 pm

Just a few pics of the new project under development, an adapter plate to fit to the Rover V8 engine, alowing it to be installed directly to the Transit Mt75 transmission.

Following on from the success of the Essex V6 conversion, we are in the process of producing an adapter plate that will enable the Rover V8 engine to be installed to the Transit Mt75 gearbox.
This will be offered to forum members in a kit form, with full installation instructions being posted up in this thread.

The kit will consist of a steel CNC cut adapter plate and all the necessary hardware to secure this to the Rover V8 engine block.
A custom spigot bearing will also be included.
We intend to manufacture engine mountings to enable the existing Mk5 Transit chassis brackets and mounting rubbers to be retained, these will be supplied in addition to the adapter plates as a pair.

We have not yet installed the engine in our Mk5, the 'Surrogate Mother', so are unable to confirm as yet if bulkhead modifications will be required, but the adapter plate has been kept to the minimum possible thickness so as to provide as much space infront of the engine as possible.

Some pictures;

Finally, a shot inside the clutch housing;

The aim is to install the engine in the Surrogate Mother and provide detailed instructions on how to connect water hoses, electrics and exhausts so as to assist those installing the kit, naturally, any assistance/advice that can be offered by other forum members will be gladly recieved.

More to follow soon,

8) Practical application.
On lpg that will be as economical if not more than a 2.5di. It will pull a house down.
And it will sound 8) as fuk

A bit more messing done today.
Fitted the engine and adapter plate in Surrogate number 2, before it goes off to the Mk5 retirement home!

Here she is;
Image
As we can see, it is a bit tight on the o/s bulkhead!
The oval hole you can see is where the clutch cable exits, there is room inside the cab to do a bit of bulkhead surgery to provide the necessary clearance.

The other side is better;
Image
This is due to the fact the Ford offset the drive-train towards the right hand side of the van!

We ensured that the engine was placed so that the crankshaft line was exactly the same a Ford intended, this way there will be no undue stress placed on gearbox mountings and the prop shaft center bearing, you can clearly see the 'tool' used for all our conversions;
Image

Here we see the 'void' where the right hand engine mounting will go;
Image
The mounting will be a 'multi-piece' fabrication, the mounting attatchment point on the Rover block are not in the same plane!

Another view looking across the front of the engine;
Image
No room for a rad at the moment though!

If the Di is the best old school Diesel engine, then the Rover V8 is the best old school petrol :)

You can't consider yourself a petrol head until you have owned at least one of each ( preferably not fitted to a Mk 6) :D :D :D :lol:

If only I could get hold of one of the 'Iceburg' development RV8 diesels, now that would be a cool engine in a Mk5 :lol:

That's the information I have recieved, thanks for the confirmation there Captain 8)

We have now 'mocked up' the mountings, CAD files produced for the individual parts, minor differences for the Mk6 ones but trying to keep as many common parts as possible to keep the cost of the 'kit' to a minimum.

Pictures to follow, just been so busy in the shop the last week!
