My '96 150 Custom LWB High Top

Postby MinorMatt » Sat Jul 19, 2014 8:51 pm

Ok, so I picked up another van yesterday...

fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=147767

Its a 150 LWB Custom in "Dark Blue" with a descent electrical spec...

I have a copy of the bill of sale - and it wasn't much shy of 20K when new!

to replace my old 190 which needs too much work to be viable in the near future (old project thread viewtopic.php?f=27&t=24006) and is going to be broken for spares.

Image

Other than the obvious, its a suprisingly good van - certainly far too good to scrap! I drove it from Sussex to Market Harborough earlier to pic up some seats for the back.

The ESOS is faulty - so I am stalling it at the moment to keep it out of limp mode - but the power has been massively lacking and its very very very smokey... When I bought it the bolts securing the exhaust outlet to the egr were missing (now replaced and a blank installed - the first thing to be done). I thought that this ma have been stopping it boosting - but still lacking in power and smokey (in fact I couldn't tell the difference between normal and limp mode...) so a quick looksy reveiled this...

Image

Soot so thick you can draw in it! (Oh and this is also all over the engine bay)... obviously exhaust coming out of the egr where it was split and being sucked in to the filter! I havent put a new filter in yet (will get one and service it tomorrow to see if there is any difference) but I think its likely to solve the lack of power!

The short term plans are to get 6 seats in it and fit rear windows, its then going to be borrowed by the city & guild motor club to tow a 1902 car to the continent (currently switzerland but plans may change). But for me to be happy for them to take it I need to get the arches sorted (probably with the help of Kalkat) and get it looking a bit tidier...

After that its going to be used to move house (again) - which is late this/early next year. Then it will be camperised!.

The first thing I did (with Kalkat) after the EGR was to remove the old rattly bulkhead, and the ply on the floor. Only 1 screw wouldn't come out and snapped (although a few of the bulkhead ones needed mole grips).

Image

A lot of work has alread been done on the floor, but there are a few patches around the inner arches that need attention - shouldn't be too big a job, and some work by the rear pillars is required too. The safe T bar will be coming off at some point (not soon) because there is a corrosion hole in the top on one side!

Overall happy with the purchase so far - and so was the local wildlife.

Looks like a good starting point, I'm sure it wont take you long to get it into a usable/reliable state :)

8) Yeah Yeah  The last LWB that I had at my workshop was done in about 3 months

Anyway...

Rear Seats which I picked up on Saturday

Image

And on Sunday morning I fitted the 1st side window

Image

Then went to the local motorfactors (which is open sunday morning!) and changed the air filter & oil filter. I didn't have time for a road test, but a quick blat up the farm showed an improvement in accelleration - but its now mis firing at low revs :?

I then went off and did a little job, but Kalkat turned up and made a start on the drivers side rear arch

Image

Its a bit grotty!

Inner arch repaired

and outer arch going on...

Looking good so far Matt, knew I should have changed the air filter, probably the fuel filter as well. And the oil filter, but never really got round to it all this year.

I made a mistake... the van was over 22K new  and has "power pack 2" and "safety pack"

This weekend we got a few bits done

Kalkat got on with the arch

Image

and got it in to primer (2K rolled on to give a "stippled" effect  )

Image

I got on with fitting the rear seats - and the other window

Image

The seats just need the seatbelts bolting to the floor now.

And I installed a 2nd battery tray on the other wing, and wired up a split charge system, changed the ESOS plunger as well as changing the leak off pipes, removing the injectors - ultrasonic cleaning and replacing them (which doesn't seem to have made any differece). I also went to dieselhead and picked up some more panels, bought a better trolley jack and swapped some wheels and tyres between this and the red one!

Oh... and I also did this

Image

One thing that is slightly worrying (and I haven't had time to investigate properly yet) is that one of the wheel studs on the front appears to be pulling through the hub... I may have to swap a hub between vans too (but given I am going to do the discs/pads anyway its not that much more work)

The stud problem Matt is caused by overtightening .Just change the stud.If you rub your finger on the head of the other 5 and find a dimple change them also. You are probarly aware of this already. :)

I'm going to have to take the hubs off anyway to swap the discs - and the discs need to come off to knock the studs out (99% sure) so I may as well just swap the hubs.

This stud looks dished at the top. The others look like they have been center punched...

''fore anybody says owt........ there IS metal behind the wheel arch. There's a piccie missing from the progress.

A skim of filler had to be used as this area is made up of parts from a couple of panel makes as none of them fitted proper!
