MK6 Transit Family Hauler.

Postby Quebulas » Sun Feb 05, 2017 10:03 pm

Recently I purchased this Transit. It has no MoT, it's rotten and it's dented pretty much everywhere. I couldn't afford one that was in decent condition so this was the only way for me. It's just the type I was looking for with the up-and-over rear door and both side doors.
I decided a while ago that it's not practical to have 4 kids and get them to places with their bikes in a car. So, I bought a van.
I want to fit 2x double seats in the rear and windows in the doors. My initial plans are obviously to repair the rust and get it past it's MoT. Then I want to fit 2x double seats in the back and 2x singles, possibly from a Mondeo, in the front. Board the rear out, and carpet it. My long term plan is better looking wheels and and sweet paint job.

This is the first thing I've ever welded as you can probably tell. I have improved quite a bit since this photo. I then fitted it. It took some fettling to get in right whice obviously is less noticeable in cardboard.

I finished the welds off and coated it with some zinc primer

Whilst poking about at something that sounded 'hollow-ish' I discovered a massive amount of rust. The box shaped piece just in front of the wheel tub disintegrated.

After deliberating what purpose that box shape served and the amount of faffing about I would need to do to replicate it, I decided just to blank the bugger off!

2x doubles in the rear and 2x singles in the front. I didn't know it was made in Southampton. I thought they were all made in Turkey.

Sorry I misread your question.... Probably just some LDV minibus seats with some seat covers over them.

Belgium, Turkey and Southampton built transits (Turkey still does) you can tell by the vin plate, if it reads,

XXTT its Turkey build
XXGB its Belgium built
XXBD its Southampton built

I have 1x double mk7 passenger seat and 1x mk7 mini bus seat in the back of mine

I managed to do a little more on my Transit today. I welded a piece under the step. It probably should've had a new step in to be honest but it'll do for now. I also repaired the sill. There was a large patch to do below the sill and a few little patches on top. Again, I probably should've replaced the whole sill but it's totally fine. I still need to fill it to make it look as though I haven't repaired it and then spraying white. I did a little bit on undersealing but I reckon I need to leave the tin to warm up on a radiator next time.
